A captivating interview with Shabbir Mohamed:
“Chronicling life in Tanganyika to a rewarding career spanning five continents”

In this latest Awakening Project KSIMC interview, Shabbir Mohamed recounts his childhood experiences from growing up in Dar-es-Salaam to some of his life challenges which include colourful and engrossing anecdotes that shaped his life and career.
He candidly talks about his disenchantment with the community leadership, which was responsible for some of his struggles earlier in his life. He touches on - what appeared at the time for him - a seemingly unimaginable dream of a career in aviation which started with studies in India against formidable odds and even included later being stranded in foreign land before landing in Canada 42 years ago.
A lot of youth who grew up in East Africa in the 50s and 60s will be able to relate to some of the challenges, experiences, joys and adventures he narrates in his interview.
Passionate about writing, he has been an editor of two community magazines, published the only Canadian Shia directory. Having recently written his memoirs, which he talks about, he feels it is important to document our history for the benefit of our future generations. They have to appreciate the struggles of their parent’s and grandparent’s and also not forget our roots.
His other passion is volunteering which started at a young age serving ‘sabeel’ at mosque events in Dar to various roles in the Montreal and Toronto jamaats, to working with the local police for more than 23 years. He continues his volunteer work for the community today in his retirement.
We thank Shabbirbhai for his time and valuable insights. May God grant him tawfiqat to continue serving our community, inshallah.

With Salaams and Du’as,

Dr. Sibtain Panjwani
Founder & Head of the Awakening Project KSIMC
