[388] $59 Genuine Lishi vs $120 Original Lishi | Is The Cheaper One Worth It?

Comparing the Cheaper "Genuine" Lishi to the "Original" Lishi

The residential Lishi tools in the Kwikset (KW1 and KW5) and Schlage (SC1 and SC4) are extremely powerful tools in the right hands. They are 2-in-1 pick and decoders. They can help the inexperienced picker make short work of Kwikset and Schlage locks. With these tools you can precisely pick the residential lock and then decode the keypins which will allow you to make the key. Being able to do this is both exciting and concerning at the same time.

Prior to this, the original creator of the tool “Original Lishi” was your only option at the high cost of $120 and you needed to show you were a locksmith to purchase it. Now, anyone can purchase the knockoff tool for less money (these were listed for $59). Lets check out first-hand how these tools look right out of the box and see if they are able to perform to the same standard as the $120 tool!

They are both original/genuine tools. If you read up on the history of Lishi, you would find out that UAP created the first Lishi tools in collaboration with Mr. Li. They had a falling out and they split, but due to contracts UAP can use the Lishi name. So one way to distinguish them was "Original" that you see state side, and "Genuine" that you see in Europe. Both are same quality, only difference is finish.

Man U just answered a question I haven’t heard from anyone else if the tension arm could be reversed. Thanks a bunch. No clue why others haven’t mentioned that also

This is a great comparison. I think a lot of people have been wondering if the cheaper picks are good enough. I've read some opinions on the subject but this is the first real comparison I've seen. Well done.

I have a sc4 sc1 kw5 and kw1 in my collection so far. Covers almost every residential door I see. I want a masterlock one. Even tho I can hand pick them well. It's just a cool toy

Great. I already have an AM5 of the cheaper sort on order. Glad to know it's likely to work. Couldn't have justified $120...would have just gone without.

Wow! As MANY others have stated- thank you so much for the 1 to 1 comparison. I've been interested in getting a few of these but couldn't justify the price per unit. However, was worried about "knock off" given obvious reasons. Truly helpful my friend! Definitely subscribed.

I really wanted a Lishi SC1, but couldn’t bring myself to pay $99 (cheapest I saw them). I thought, “there must be an inexpensive copy, but where”???
Then, I saw this. Thank you so much! Got a Genuine on the way, coming Wednesday!

When I picked mine up, I just got the SC4 and KW5. These will work fine for SC1 and KW1. Nice evaluation.

Cheaper ones are fine. Lishi which means Mr. Lee in Chinese, he invented the tools off of German picks. German picks did not have the depth and spaces so Mr. Lee incorporated into the tool so that it's much easier to pick since you don't have to guess around, like converting violin into guitar if that makes easier to understand. At the early stage of tool developing, the English distribution company filed patent for the tool since Mr.Lee was not familiar with the patent process. So it became a big thing about the rights to produce the tools between Mr. Lee and them. So the English company came up with the name Genuine Lishi vs Lishi tool. At early stage locksmith tool distributors sold Genuine Lishi more than Lishi Tools not knowing the background story but lately most of them are carrying Lishi tools so I guess they sided with Mr. Lee than Genuine Lishi. I bought both of them at the beginning and both were pretty much identical in quality so if you buy Genuine Lishi products you should be fine. The plastic casings are actually the idea of Genuine lIshi because Lishi tools shipped out a case at the beginning. Don't know how they sorted out the patent issue but the quality again should be the same. My 2 cents.

Well done. I’d be interested to see some dimensional comparisons with a micrometer or caliper.

I have had lishi's not fit perfectly in key ways. Got a little overboard with the sc4 tried it on pne with various spring tension, when it got to #5, pick got stuck and now learning how to replace the pick on the sc4. Found a video on repairing a kwikset version, hope I do well

Great video, really well explained! I’m a first timer and live in the UK. What would be my best purchase to fit the most common house door lock? From what I’ve researched so far, I’m assuming the SC4? Or maybe that won’t work on most front doors? Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Thank you for the video!

Which would you recommend getting for common door lock picking kw5, am5 or sc4? Newbie getting started with the picking hobby and would like an easier method than guessing with a regular pick lol

Based on this video the Genuine KW1 and SC1 gave spot on readings, but the Genuine KW5 and SC4 gave readings that are half a step off. The Original KW1 and SC1 gave slightly off readings but the Original KW5 and SC4 gave spot on readings. So I'd get the Genuine KW1 and Genuine SC1 but would get the Original KW5 and Original SC4.
