Two performances of Mazurka, op.67 no.2 by Frédéric Chopin.

ABRSM Grade 6 Piano (2021 & 2022) - B1.

RCM Level 8 (2015)

This video is for Leon & Sophia.

There are nearly 60 Mazurkas by Chopin, he wrote them throughout his (short) life. This particular one was written just months before he died in 1849 and was published posthumously (with 3 others written in the 1830s) a few years later.

I refer to a recording by Joanna MacGregor, part of her complete Chopin Mazurkas. If you use Spotify, here it is.

Best ABRSM performances on YouTube IMHO.
No drama and weird body contortions, which I feel sometimes distract from the performance—just beautifully played renditions.
Thank you

I am practicing this song for 2 things: First one, grade six exam. And a competition. With the competition, if you get a high score, you actually can win real money so I am trying really hard

Dear Julian, Thank you so much for that beautiful rendering of Chopin’s Mazurka. It was so soothing, calming the troubled waters of this 3rd lockdown.l just loved your chat before it as it smoothed the way towards the Mazurka.. Giving advice to your audience is one thing but connecting with them is a gift ! Thank you Phyllis Irl

Thanks for this Julian. Its helped me understand this piece. I still cant believe I passed my grade 5 at 50...I already have my A piece done...and my C piece..this one I am finding trickier....dreading all the theory I need to get done before I can get my practical done. I am hoping by xmas to get both done...one day grade 8 hopefully by 55ish :-)

Finding your channel saved my life in my music education! I'm currently preparing for my music diploma in teaching after freshly finishing grade 8. Your version of playing gives more insight, and your explanations in other videos hold valuable information on how to teach certain points, which is especially useful for my current situation.

May I ask how exactly would you execute the sotto voce (in bars 33-40) for its best effect? In contrast to the chords and rather rigid 3/4 tempo, this passage seems daunting because of how plain it is. Thank you in advance :-)

Amazing precise playing, thank you so much for all your help. The pedalling of this piece seems odd, in the exam copy there are minimal pedal markings. However, it obviously sounds better with additional pedal. Would you recommend to pedal throughout the piece? Would it be acceptable in an exam to do so? Many thanks again.

Hi, it sounds lovely. I would like to try to do grade 6 ARSM and I wonder...at the end of bar 32 you have go back and play from bar 17.
Do you have to do that in your exam? Or just carrying on till the end ?
Thank you

In bar 14 in the left hand on the third note how did your hand stretch from e to g to c. It's very difficult

In first performance you played some notes that are not in the score. There should be double 'd' in left hand on Dmaj7 and later Chopin wrote Gm and E flat major in one bar.

Hello Julian, I have a question :
How do you half-pedal?

I am struggling with bar 14. My hands are to small to do it all in one chord 😓
