The Mirror is an open-source game engine platform that was being developed using the Godot game engine, the key word being "was". The Mirror is an attempt to create an open source Roblox or Fortnite and for a variety of technical reasons, they have decided to move away from using the Godot game engine to power the project.

As the former foundational engineer and former employee of The Mirror, this doesn't surprise me in the least. I wrote the majority of the now "mirror-classic" code. The company is founded by non-game developers who have no idea what game developers want or need, and have never published a game in their life. They also switch focus rapidly at whatever is shiniest at the moment. You may remember the original name of the product was "The Mirror: Cross-Chain 3D NFT Megaverse". The company was founded on Crypto Metaverse craze money. The entire project is a cash dumpster fire.

Roblox itself was built on open source technologies. They used Ogre3D as the graphics renderer for the client up until 2014 when they switched to their own proprietary renderer

I watched the The Mirror video. It is super rambly and he says a lot without actually saying anything. The TL;DW is that they were coming from web dev and took a bunch of stuff for granted and assumed it would be present in some form because it is built-in in web dev. They also didn't properly design the foundation because they developed it in silos too much.
That is all, he literally says no more specific technical reasons.

I used The Mirror for some days when I saw your previous video. It was good but I just didn't felt like "This is it, this is what I was looking for." and I moved on.

So The Mirror stops using Godot for some technical reason related to the way they handle the HTTP transport layer. Confusingly, there is also the Mirror Networking package for Unity which handles networking for you above the transport layer. Not really related but I found the adjacency humorous, since I happen to be learning Mirror Networking right now

They can't compete with roblox if they name the product "The Mirror"
also despite their "open sourceness" they still haven't fulfilled the promise of porting stuff from the mirror to Godot. I doubt they even care. If they can't keep a single promise, it's hard to believe the next one.

There is a very good reason why the AAA game engines no longer support JavaScript ... it's because there are so many superior modern languages available, JS is an antiquated language. Good luck with that.

The Mirror has just always been about being a product focused at investors for investor funding. Which was also super evident from any marketing material they put out ever.

Pretty much the Musk of Game engines, but not as successful at selling vaporware.

I really like the Mirror too, I'm sorry to see that they need to leave Godot, but wish Jared and the rest of his team the best moving forward. I'll still be following their progress.
