The Apache could outrun HORSES

Apache warriors had a secret training technique that would allow them to outrun horses. Here’s how it worked:

Among the Apache, running is a sign of a warrior-ship.

Apache warriors could cover over 70 miles per day on foot through rugged deserts and mountains with limited water, more than what a pursuing calvary horse could cover.

Apache children would learn to run while holding a mouth full of water in order to promote deep, steady, lung breathing.

This technique was practiced on long runs, hill sprints and stealthy games they called “stalking runs”.

When I was in the Marine Corps I served with an Apache brother and we called him Chief. Chief could run his ass off for long distances without much effort. He was an awesome Marine 👌.

I lived and worked on the Apache Rez. They did actually talk about an old tradition where they would run up this mountain and back down with a mouthful of water. If they could come back and spit it out, it was a man’s right of passage.

Breathe DEEP Breathe SLOW (through the nose)
Make it rhythmic to your running.

I used to run marathons and my times dropped when I started holding water in my mouth a mile at a time, I went from 4hrs 30 minute to 3hrs 12 minutes it really works! 😊

Silver braids are badge of honor. Much earned wisdom to learn from them . Miss the native friends i grew up with in Kansas. Tough but very respectful.

Not only Apache warriors could outrun pursuers. Women carried their children by foot for 70+ miles per day. Top to bottom their culture was built by strength and grit.

Bushmen in Southern Africa used to do that too. They had a running style they called, “eating the wind”, which they could keep at for days. They where used as trackers by various Calvary units, and it was reported they would be told to stop and wait, because the horses couldn’t keep up with them over long distances.

In races like the Australian Ultra (a 24 hour event), experienced runners have covered 100 miles in just 22 hours. Elite ultrarunners can push even further some have run over 150 miles in a single day. It might sound impossible, but it's been done time and time again. One famous example is Cliff Young, an Australian farmer who won the Sydney to Melbourne Ultramarathon (a 543 mile race). He didn’t realize he was supposed to stop, so while other runners took breaks, he just kept going and ended up winning the race. 10 hours ahead of his nearest competitor.

Long distance running is one of humanity’s legit super powers. Not all cultures practice it, but before we had horses we could outrun all kinds of 4 legged critters over distances.

Appreciate you. Having grown up on the Navajo reservation I can tell you firsthand the Apache are solid warriors to this day. You really don't want to cross a traditional Apache. Serious people.

They also had water caches and used agave plant stocks along running trails as small water sources that were planted and cut so that the water welled up in them ready for use. They're still there to this day.

They still do that, I had an Apache on my cross country team. Our cross country team had an Apache, two Navajo brothers and me Isleta Pueblo. Historically we were all enemies.

That's awesome. When I was in the Navy. I wanted to see how far I could walk in one day. Starting at dawn ending at sundown. It was exactly 60 miles. So I can imagine running would be further.😘

According to General Nelson Miles, stationed in Arizona territory in the 1880s. And Apache Warrior could run 100 miles a day in rugged terrain with a pebble under his tongue to promote salvation.
