Three Levels of Temptation - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

Friends, we come now to the great and holy season of Lent, a time to get back to spiritual basics. This First Sunday of Lent, we hear Luke’s account of the temptation of Jesus. What Jesus faces in the desert are three classical substitutes for God—three levels of temptation, three types of diversion from the ultimate good. Can we look honestly and directly at those things that will cause us to deviate from the path the Lord has for us?

My temptation to sin is always based on serving self. What Bishop Barron calls the ego drama. Pope Francis said: So often in life we waste time asking ourselves “who am I”? You can keep asking “who am I” for the rest of your life. But the real question is “ for whom am I”? Of course you are for God. But he has decided that you should be for others, and has give you many qualities, inclination, gifts and charisms that are not for you but to be shared with those around you. The Pope’s words, and listening to this great Bishop as often as possible, helps to orient my life away from temptations of the self.

*Bishop Barron:* Set aside a preoccupation with sensual pleasure. That is why we fast during Lent. *Set aside an infatuation with worldly power. That becomes a plaything of the devil.* Set aside this bloated self-importance of the ego. Thats just leads to trouble. *And keep yourself focused on God, ... Make yourself available to his grace.*

I think it was Aristotle who said, "the last desire that the wise man overcomes is the desire for fame" it is very true.

I really enjoy Bishop Barron’s way of unpacking the word of God in a way that helps you examine yourself. He packs so much into a 15 minute sermon.

This was really excellent! I’ve never heard this Gospel story interpreted in this way. It really made an impact on me, which I needed right now. Thanks Bishop!

My greatest temptation is food. I give into it more often, although I want to fast during lent, I am craving for food on that particular day and finally I give in. I am sorry Lord, I don't know how Jesus went without food and drink for 40 days. Probably because He was Human and Divine at the same time.

Thanks and God bless you Bishop Barron! Your sermon and an essay of yours in Magnificat prompted me to come up with the '3 P's' of temptations so that I don't forget them and keep them at bay: penchant, power, pride. Hope this helps my fellow listeners and God bless all of you as you strive to fight of the devil's temptations this Lent and always!

Bishop you have the best teaching method when you stop and say, “listen now” and I’m like everyone quiet!!! He’s gonna say something important!!! Then I’m like 😲🤔😀

Hail Mary Full of Grace
Ps 86:11, Lk 5:31

Our Lady of Peace, I implore Thee to come to my aid always and everywhere, in my pray of wellness and temptations, after my falls, in my difficulties, in all the miseries of life, and above all, at the hour of my death. Amen

Our Father…Hail Mary…Glory Be…pray for Ukrainian and Russian Amen

Thank you for reminding us to keep our focus on God. Corrie Ten Boom, portrayed in the movies "The Hiding Place" wrote a poem that said: "If you look within, you will be depressed. If you look about, you will be distressed. So look at Jesus and be at rest." The more we focus on Jesus, the more peace and joy will be in our hearts...even during these most trying and painful times. Thank you for your inspiration Bishop Barron. Diane
