Speaking from a Psychological perspective, Onion's actions are essentially a product of his loneliness and immaturity. As a child, he lacks proper development in understanding morality and empathy. Given the fact that he rarely sees his own parents and doesn't have any friends, that has only prevented him from property learning to understand the feelings of other people. That being said, his boredom, combined with lack of empathy, are essentially what causes him to do some questionable and often violent actions.
