The Montreux Convention of 1936 gives Turkey control over the Turkish Straits, which are the Dardanelles and the Bosporus straits that connect the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. The convention allows merchant ships to pass through the straits freely, but limits the passage of military warships, depending on whether they belong to Black Sea littoral states. In times of war, Turkey can close the straits to all warships.

It was signed on July 20, 1936, in the Montreux Palace in Switzerland, and took effect on November 9, 1936.
