Craic is NOT Irish. It is Scots and Northern English. Introduced by the Ulster-Scots from Northern Ireland who speak Scots.
Crack is the original spelling and it is short for Firecracker, a word to describe loud conversation and joking.
Crack was not introduced into the Irish Volcabulary until the 1950s but had been used in Scots and Northern English for hundreds of years. The word did not become popular til the 1970s.
The spelling was changed to be more Gaelic. Because the Gaelic alphabet for not have the Letter K, the word was changed to Craic instead.
So crack is a Scots/English word loaned into Irish then loaned back into English with a different spelling. Even though people in the Northern England and Scotland still spell it crack.
