Magic johnson & karl malone were two men you didn’t see having beef. during the young 1990’s, most people knew little about the HIV virus and it’s contract-ability in sports. Karl Malone was a perfect example of this ignorance when he refused to play in games against Magic Johnson who had just a year earlier announced to the world his hiv status. Malone’s comments, whispers around the NBA and an open wound during a recent pre season forced Magic to pull out of his comeback season with the lakers.

here’s a #shorts from a larger interview with Chris Wallace which can be found in its entirety here:

Karl should have this energy towards underaged girls aswell oops

The best response to this drama was from Charles Barkley. The reporter gave Malone's comment and asked Barkley how he felt and he replied "We're just playing ball with the man, not trying to #$%k him".

Thank you Jordan and Bulls for preventing Malone from winning a Title!

Let’s be honest, Malone said what a whole lot of people were thinking back then… he just had the balls 🏀 to say it everybody was terrified

If Magic had played that season, he would've won DPOY.

Karl malone should have had this energy in raising his kids that he disowned

This is an awesome clip where Magic Doesn't Confront Karl Malone, in any part of it.

Magic penetrates down the middle, he goes all the way. Chick Hearn knew what he was doing LOL

Magic is such a class act. Love this guy. One of the best. Top 3 for sure. This is coming from a Celtics fan. I mean other than him beating us in the finals a couple times you have to love this guy. Great attitude and high spirits even when cut down in the prime of his basketball career. I do understand concern from other players and I’m quite sure it wasn’t personal. I’m am glad he was able to not only play in the all star game with an incredible performance, on the dream team (best USA BB team ever and it’s not close), and return for another year. His numbers were solid. 4 year absence, HIV, 27 llbs heavier, and a lil slower yet he put up good numbers. Love ya #32!

Karl Malone might get slammed for this but imagine people having irrational fear over little danger from a virus ...

Malone no angel but y'all have to understand the context, this was early 90s, ppl misinformed abt hiv, and not to mention the stigma. Y'all can relate with malone concern if y'all live in that era

They was afraid of never making it past magic in the conference finals

Just here to say that Karl Malone is a horrible person who impregnated a 13 year old and told Vanessa Bryant he was "hunting for little Mexican girls"

The fact he hasn't been totally exiled from anything basketball related is absurd

It’s a downright tragedy we didn’t get to see magic after he contracted the virus.

Not sure why Kar is getting all the hate, he's not entirely wrong - he didn't say he wouldn't play, he said he wouldn't go as hard as their can be blood transfusion

I'm not defending Karl, but the stigma in the 90s and early 2000s was something else.
Thankfully, things are so much better now🤷🏻🤷🏻🤷🏻🙏

What, take it easy much wasn't really known yet. You guys try playing a contact sport and see if it wouldn't be in the back of your mind. Then think of how it would affect your life with your love ones. It was scary shit.
