To craft something, e.g. clean water, you do not need to do anything with the ingredients or tools other than have them nearby, they don't even need to be on your person. The only exemption are some power tools that need to be turned on. Your problem was that its not possible to make clean water from salt water although you can boil it to make salt. Also, a filled pot can't be used as a tool IIRC.

You can collect rainwater, but you need a funnel of some sort to do it. A makeshift one can be crafted. However I think snow can't be collected as water doing this.

It's a frustrating game a the begining, but check some basic survival tutorials because some basic things are tough to get and understand!
I'm perfectly fine with you bringing a new character!

First off, the usual early source for water is a toilet in any of the houses, that is the water you can boil. The other sources of water are rivers/swamps/pools (the water tiles in the world) or the rain. To collect rain you need a funnel first which you can sew from a bit of leather or cut together from plastic containers (1 jug or 3 bottles or 6 small bottles). Activate to place it and put your largest container under it, then it just takes time.

For crafting you might want to familiarize yourself with the search function. You can search directly for qualities like containing or boiling or hammering and see what recipes you know that craft a tool for that quality. Good for figuring out what you need to look out for in the world. For example you can find out that you can actually make a sealed stomach container instead of boiling and eating them. And if no clean water recipe appears that calls for salt water as a material you can't make clean water from salt water.

Hey mathas you can’t boil salt water you need to find fresh water. Also in order to clean water you most find the clean water tab in cooking menu located in crafting the search feature in menus can be accessed through / . And you only really have to worry about hunger and thirst when the lettering turns red.

Multidrop: Press Shift+D and a direction you want to drop to. From your inventory, just press move to right to add stuff you want to drop and enter to confirm.

thanks mathas...i have a lot of hours in this game...i always use the really bad day start..but watching you testing stuff out i still learn stuff xD ...for example i didnt know that you could activate a pot to heat stuff...always thought it had to be a cooker...and i really like the zombie killing with the wreck.
the issue with the pot is, i believe, that its not sealable...hence you could carry liquids around while holding it in your hands....but in your bags only stuff like the plastic bottle works.
like other ppl mentioned you walked past the bathroom. in the swamp there might be other puddles with non salty water. putting a pot outside in the rain should work...but i think the game only recognizes activated funnels.... Walking around at night is great for avoiding a lot of stuff which needs to see you to attack...some enemies can smell bumping into a brute might be a last surprise if you cant get back into the dark fast enough...but its still worth it in my opinion.

You CAN boil salt water IRL, but that does not get rid of the salt. It DOES turn the water to steam, which does NOT have salt in it. The salt is left behind. You then need to have a way to capture the steam to get your drinkable water. I have NO idea if there is a way to do this in CDDA. Might be something to look into? It seems like something that could potentially be a thing in a game like this, albeit advanced!

You did miss the bathroom in that first house. It was the door you didn't check on the west side. Not a back door, a bathroom.

I wouldn't be terribly surprised if it was both the heat of the lava and supernatural shenanigans, knowing the little I know about this game...Though it was *probably* just the heat...Probably...
(You might want to consider moving to a new cabin in the near future.)

Mathasgames you can collect water from rain using a container and a funnel the boil it as well boiling salt water wont work with out a lot more work

What makes this funny to me, is that you have already done the procedure for cleaning water.

Maybe the aching was from the sudden wild temperature change? I guess it's hard to simulate temperature gradients

You should drop either the winter coat or the emergency jacket. Having both on is hurting your encumbrance.
