Because companies have unrealistic expectations and their job requirements are more of a wish-list

They want experienced employees, but don't want to train them to get the experience.

A good comment I saw is basically this.

They want the experience of a 50 year old.

The drive and performance of a 30 year old.

The pay expectations of a 20 year old.

True story. Interviewed for a position about a decade ago. They called me and said I "wasn't the best fit". No job offer. Then they called me the next day and offered me a contract role for about 1/2 original pay. Said "no" immediately and hung up. Don't regret that decision at all.

I think it boils down to many companies having too high growth expectations so they keep wanting more and more experienced employees to join, instead of having to spend time on training new unexperienced employees. It really killed the old school way of learning at a job, especially in the tech industry.

It used to be 3 years of experience in 2020, now it's 5. Can't wait to see 7 years experience for an entry level next year

Because it’s not a real job that the company is hiring for. It’s a ghost position. My former company did that to keep positions open but vacant. Told staff they just couldn’t find anyone. Everyone was doing the exhaustive jobs of 2 & 3 people with no additional pay. Many of us left.

i studied and dedicated all my finance and savings to getting a degree in Mechanical engineering. for the last year its been impossible to get a job, but i managed to get a 1 year contract as a trainee for a maintenance company.

over the last month, ive begun to apply under the assumption that now that i have experience in the industry, i should have it easier to be able to explain myself better and be more valuable to companies.

but now with all these fucking dumb high standard requirements, im not even getting a foot in the door because the standards have gone higher. FUCK THIS SYSTEM

Recruiters would have zero tolerance for a simple punctuation error on a resume; I don't think they get a pass for being clumsy or lazy posting a job advertisement without proofreading it.

At this point kids are going to have to start getting experience in middle school if they want to have enough experience for a job when they get out of high school or college, lol. 😅

Ignore the job requirements and apply anyway. As long as you don’t have supervisory authority over anyone else, like a team lead, the “experience” requirements are usually flexible.

Having experience at the "wrong" place can hurt you too, the fun never ends

I have heard hiring managers openly admit that they list as "entry level" because they are going to pay on the low end of the scale for the region, but the will treat the listing as a "wish list" and push for people who "want the job bad enough." Maybe my experiences are not typical, but it's been a yellow or red flag on the employer for me.

Some unpaid internships I was looking at required 1-3 years experience.

I noticed startup companies were the most demanding with internships 😭

The simple answer is this: they want a unicorn that has the experience out the gate. They aren’t interested in training for the role for a low/no experience candidate. In addition they are also looking to get an experienced candidate that is willing to work for lower pay. Also I think that they are also afraid of Job Hoppers.

So at the end of it all it’s about Greed as usual.

I always thought it's because companies want rocket scientists at a janitors wage

I honestly see it as just a wish list lol If I am interested, I will apply, I don't care haha They need to realize that they are pushing candidates to either lie on their applications or not apply at all. It's insane!

I've been a hiring manager before. I've also worked with my manager who took over the hiring process and didn't know what he was doing. A poor job posting is a major red flag for working for the hiring manager. Maybe the recruiter doesn't understand the job, maybe there is a mistake with posting, but the hiring manager should catch this and ensure that it is corrected. If that doesn't happen, maybe the hiring manager doesn't understand the job, or doesn't care about having good employees. Seeing a poor job posting is also a moral killer for the current team. They see the manager's poor understanding of the team or lack of respect for the position. Sometimes if no one good applies, it is because the good people know to avoid poor hiring managers.

Nobody is training and developing staff anymore the expectation is you can just hire in whoever you want when you want at the price you want and then just let them go when you no longer need them. A symptom of breakdown of employee employer relationship.

My favorite is when they want a degree and 5 yrs experience for $14/hr 😑
