It may have just been worded weird because of a language barrier but I'm pretty sure my current landlord told me if i get a boyfriend ill get evicted. Like not even anything about this theoretical man moving in with me, just if im not single i cant live here. He also has a locked box over my thermostat. And isnt even the worst landlord ive had lol

My landlord tried shit like that, and i was like "I'm paying to live here, whoever i invite over is none of your business. Attempting to dictate how i live in MY apartment is going to end pretty badly for you, i will take this to court."

The sign was removed the next morning, state laws pretty much tell the landlord what they can or cant do. None of which allows them to ban visitors.

I still live there and theyve raised everyones rent but mine. Apparently they want to keep me around.

I had a landlord tell me i wasnt able to stay the night other places on the weekends. "If you live here during the week, you live here during the weekend too". She was always paid early and in full. I frequently worked over time so when i had a full weekend off i was not staying at the fucking house.

I'd take this as a challenge to bring as many overnight visitors to my apartment as possible

Wait, where is that legal? Most developed countries guarantee and enforce certain basic renters' rights. Because the landlord is renting-out the apartment and it's now the renter's legal domicile, the degree to which the former can invade that space and make demands of the latter is actually much more limited than many people believe, regardless of whether they own the property as a whole. They can't restrict your home to particular prescribed uses and forbid others (aside from causing damage or significant renovations), and whether or not you have a friend, family member, or partner stay over is none of their business as long as they're not staying long or frequently enough to be living there for all practical purposes.

I understand if they want to limit it to like, 3 days per week so that renters dont basically have people who aren't on the lease live with them, but flat out banning overnight visitors is plain ridiculous.

I have typically seen this sort of a stipulation on Single Room Occupancy buildings… places where many of the people living there are on Section 8 housing or some other housing assistance… though I have never been given a reason why those are the rules.

It only makes sense to me in the case of a boarding house where you might have a roommate and the place is literally full already.

lol I live in a dorm room, and I like living in a dorm room tbh, which is theoretically the strictest form of apartment but apparently it isn’t. I can have overnight visitors for a certain period. Wow the US should have laws that give tenants better rights.

Pretty sure it's to cover the landlord if/when the tenant tries to sub-lease. In my lease contract I was allowed a week for visitors.
