Dragon Warrior is the most realistic RPG to date: it teaches you that there is no way around just gritting your teeth and putting in the work.

I'm a speedrunner of this game. I grew up with an immense love for it and really enjoyed the grinding process as a kid. I guess I'm weird like that. The speedrun is still fascinating to me as it takes what is 6-8 hour game and pushes it to its limits, with the current top times under 24 minutes and finishes the game at level 7. Definitely something people should check out if they haven't. Most people assume the speedrun is cheated or uses the game genie but I assure you it does not and is entirely scripted and solved, and almost everything can be manipulated with enough knowledge and time.

Impressive translation for such an early RPG. I just ran through DW 1-4 last year again and had a blast. Great game.

Nintendo Power was absolutely the reason that I got this game, and that was one of the only times in my childhood that I got a new video game unless it was Christmas or my birthday. I had a stack of NP magazines from #13 through #70.

I miss those days.

I think this was my first RPG I ever played. Have a very very very special spot in my heart for this game. Beyond articulation. I remember me my brother my friends all playing and giving each other tips and who found the next thing and how to get this thing and where to find that thing. You just had to explore and figure it out

My favorite game from my NES days. I still play it from time to time 40 years later.

I'm so glad we didn't lose Fluff to that TV show, "Everyone Loves Fluff", they were much beloved this episode. Good job!

After watching this video, I fired up my ORIGINAL NES I bought when I was a kid in 1985. I still have my copy of Dragon Warrior I got with the Nintendo Power subscription. I got the game fired up and my characters were STILL THERE. Amazing

Great video! Started watching last night, fell asleep about halfway through so I had to go back and finish it first thing today. Also grew up with this game as a kid in the 80s so it’s great still seeing it get the love and respect it deserves for everything it did for RPGs.

Omg..this game changed my life as a kid. Also I *love* how the dungeon music is the same but gets slower and deeper pitch as you go down to fight the dtagonlord.

For as clingy as Princess Gwaelin is, the player is capable of finishing the game without rescuing her. This actually changes the ending a fair bit.

Additionally, should you save Gwaelin, you can go through the rest of the game without ever depositing her back at the castle. NPCs will react to you carrying her around, and even the Dragonlord has some bonus dialogue if you show up with Gwaelin in tow.

The walkthrough plus the humor & history facts is great to watch!

I was so impressed that the game actually animated the princess in your arms that I never considered how ridiculous it was for her to be in your arms for the entire journey. I suppose it would actually have been more difficult to implement her walking beside you.

Awesome video Prof! This game was one of my first RPG experiences. Thanks to all the TA's for their hard work as always, especially Blaze for his wealth of knowledge.

Growing up, my father bought a final fantasy for my brother and my mother, and I played Dragon Warrior for Nes. we didn't have a lot of money growing up, but we did get a Nintendo, and it was something special kids these days have no idea! ❤ Plus, I still own the copy!

Great video! I played this game nd liked it as a kid but had no clue what I what doing. Was fun watching you play and hearing all the depth and detail that was lost on me as a kiddo. Thanks for making this.

I had no idea about the name generation! (nice "it is a good name" reference). In regards to it being a slog, I remember playing this while riding an exercise bike when I was younger. A game like this was easy to play while riding that bike, so it was a great way to exercise and play at the same time. Also didn't know the magic harp brings in a random weak enemy... the things you learn!
Metal Slimes are the best (when you can find them). It's rather chilling if you accept the Dragonlord's request to join him too. The weird darkening of the screen with the blood red lettering... creepy stuff, especially if you blundered into it as a kid.

Dragon Warrior was actually the first NES game I ever played. My Uncle Frank (RIP) bought an NES for me and my brothers and got us a subscription to Nintendo Power and it came with Dragon Warrior, for Christmas.
