Hello snap on Ubuntu Core

Ubuntu Core is a very interesting operating system for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. This operating system is supported on diverse hardware including, naturally, the Raspberry Pi family. However, not all Raspberry Pi models are supported. The concept of snap is "containerized" environment which lends itself to isolated operations with constraints on limiting the interfaces for interaction with resources. While this may be a pain during development, for production use it offers somewhat of a peace of mind, which is important when there could many such application environments in the industrial world.

This video steps through the introductory phases of the deployment of Ubuntu Core on a Raspberry Pi computer. However, the development of applications is preferably conducted on a desktop, which can also serve as a remote client for the management of the Ubuntu Core device. Also, please understand the true purpose of Hello World exercises. These examples are simply to ensure that the installation of the operating system and the supporting libraries are working. These examples will never be a demonstration of pyrotechnics.

Currently, Ubuntu Core is very lightweight, but Canonical has major plans to offer extended features with a Desktop version of Ubuntu Core. Given the importance of security (in the context of container-like features), you should evaluate Ubuntu Core if you want to develop industrial IoT solutions.
