A couple of years ago I sent Frank Malzone copies of the early Leland Cubs he was in. I remember being a small child and my Dad picking up the team in a converted bread truck with bi-fold rear doors. One afternoon he pulled up behind the bread truck full of the players and me (I was a mascot of sorts) in a big convertible to inform them that he had signed with the Yankees. Frank's parents had a dry cleaning store on the corner of Bolton & Soundview in Clason Point, Bronx. He & the neighborhood kids used to play street ball and my Aunt Carol and Uncle Hank played with the Malzone kids. Imagine my surprise when Mr. Malzone called me, thanked me for the copies, (I sent doubles) and he autographed them. We enjoyed the memories of when he lived in Clason Point & was part of my Dad's team. RIP # 11 & # 8. Baseball's Mr. Gentleman!
