In the early hours of January 16, 2025, the skies over Cape Canaveral were lit up by Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket, marking a significant milestone in the expanding commercial space industry. This inaugural flight of Jeff Bezos's ambitious orbital-class rocket was not just a test of engineering prowess but a bold statement in the ongoing space race among billionaire tycoons. The New Glenn, towering at 320 feet, blasted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, aiming to place a payload into orbit for the first time. This mission was critical for Blue Origin, as it sought to prove its capability in the high-stakes arena where SpaceX has long been the dominant player. The rocket, named after the legendary astronaut John Glenn, was designed to compete directly with SpaceX's Falcon 9, offering substantial payload capacity and the promise of reusability.
The launch window opened at 1 a.m. EST, and after years of anticipation, delays, and meticulous preparations, the rocket's seven BE-4 methane-fueled engines roared to life, propelling New Glenn into the darkness of the early morning sky. The mission was live-streamed, attracting thousands of viewers, space enthusiasts, and industry analysts who watched with bated breath as the rocket ascended, leaving behind a trail of luminous exhaust against the night sky. Following the launch, Elon Musk, the visionary behind SpaceX, took to his social media platform, X, to comment on the event. Historically known for his candid and often provocative remarks, Musk's reaction this time was one of cautious optimism and respect. "Congratulations on reaching orbit on the first attempt Jeff bezos!”.
This acknowledgment from Musk, who has long been seen as Bezos's primary competitor in the space sector, highlighted the potential for healthy competition that could drive innovation in space technology further.
Musk's comment wasn't just about sportsmanship; it was a nod to the broader implications of having multiple companies capable of reliable orbital launches. His response also subtly underscored SpaceX's ongoing projects, like the Starship, suggesting that the race for space is far from over.
Jeff Bezos, in turn, responded with a gracious acknowledgment of Musk's congratulations. In a post on X, Bezos wrote, "Thank you”. His reply not only accepted the commendation but also emphasized Blue Origin's long-term commitment to space, hinting at future collaborations or at least a mutual respect in the pursuit of cosmic goals.

Congrats to BO!! Good luck to them on the next attempt. I’m sure they will have some lessons learned from this one

I guess their next launch will be 3 to 6 years.

Good on ya, BO. I don’t understand all the BO haters tho - we know SpaceX is ahead but competition is healthy in a free market. Good on Elon for his congratulations & go Starship 7.

Just watched the Lex Fridman podcast with Elon Musk, and now I’m even more excited about XAI01v!

The more good rockets the better for all, producers and customers. Congrats. For the first time is normal that something goes wrong, it is even wishful to find errors and advance further.

When elon says godspeed that means good luck competing with spacex ! 😂

How long until they can replace the lost booster?

India does it on extremely low budget, so we don’t expect cameras. Blue Origin needs to have more cameras, coz yes, supports n cheers from nobodies does matter. Many dislike the space race n nothing like video feeds to fight the negativity.

Jeff B realizing he'll need many ships to fly before he can land one ~ to little to late ~ where's your next ship jeff? still under construction? How many more Billions will you need to build another one?

BO should talk to SpaceX about using starlink for in flight communications so they can stream reliably and add more cameras. I have little doubt Elon would be willing to help them out after all he isn't trying to be an exclusive supplier for orbital services.

Don't mock Blue Origin. At least they got it to orbit. Not many can claim that feat. Competion is great. Competion keeps everyone honest.

Is this blue origin's only launch scheduled this year?

Congratulations to Blue Orgin. Keep up the work and maybe in 50 years they can get to the moon. Slow and stop will never win a space race.

That's kind of funny that BO said the 1st stage failed when it lost communication ....yea....RUD will cause that almost every time. What's their production rate look like? How many years until their next attempt?

It was very pretty. However, its primary competition is about to become obsolete. Would like most information at the R.U.D. of the first stage. How long will B.O. due to the anomaly.

Now the 1 billion question is how long before the next launch another 20 years or will they have a 5 year plan now
