Live: Keir Starmer holds emergency press conference following meeting with police chiefs

The Prime Minister holds a Downing Street press conference today after summoning police chiefs for emergency talks on the violent protests in the wake of the Southport knife attack.

Keir Starmer held talks with senior officers in Number 10 following a second night of violence on England's streets. Unrest flared in London, Hartlepool and Manchester on Wednesday night, while a demonstration in Aldershot saw a tense stand-off with riot police.

At the start of the gathering, the PM said "action will be taken" following what he called "violent disorder" in parts of England.

If they ruled out terrorism it’d calm the situation, they seem very reluctant to do so. The parallels with the Manchester Arena attack are very difficult to ignore and all Farage did was ask the questions we are all asking! The media are clearly out to get him. I note that the recent attacks on certain banks and businesses by the far left and the riot in Leeds wasn’t mentioned oddly. Those antisocial and violent actions in Southport can’t be condoned, as the riots in Leeds can’t a few weeks ago, but it’s a big mistake to tar all the concerned citizens of this country as “far right” for feeling outraged at the slaughter of young children by someone that COULD possibly be ideologically motivated. The public need answers.
