It really doesn’t require a whole lot of dialogue here, he’s paying the full rent and he’s living with somebody. She needs to get a job and pay half the rent or he needs to get a roommate. George’s advice is spot on.

Man, this poor kid really needs a father. I can hear it in his voice. He's just looking for some guidance.

Do what you have to do. I lived in a station wagon in my twenties for a few months. This was in the 90’s before van life, but it helped me save a ton of money at that time.

I have a relative who has lived in a camper/ van for maybe 20 years. She has a PhD, is single and retired. Loves her life. I also know a couple who live in a nice camper on a utility only expense lot. They are working the Ramsey plan to get ahead.

One year later and I’m actually seriously considering selling my house and building a box truck into a studio apartment and cruising the country! Also I’m at about 2500 a month on a retirement income!

I know a guy who during college worked as a welder (among other jobs) during the summers. He lived in his truck, showered at the gym, laundry at the laundromat. This was a long time ago and i don’t think I’d want to sign up for it but said he didn’t mind it and liked how simple it was.

We live in a rv full time in Memphis . Went from over 4K a month household bills to $ 700 .. it was the best decision we ever made . We are saving a lot of money living this way .. not sure why anyone would be against it 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

I’ve lived in a van. Never to save on housing, but it’s a cheap way to travel, and I never got tired of the lifestyle. Even though I now own two properties, I still think about living in a van.

Living in a van is basically a spending cut. It makes sense in terms of saving money.

I know of a couple who finished a 5 year tour living out of a van in San Francisco both are CPA's who at the time were newly minted (recently passed CPA exam). Their first two years at the firm was junior associate level which translate to we don't pay crap as we (the firm) don't know if you have what it takes. Even when promoted to associate level (big bump from up crap) they could rent but the vast portion of their pay would go straight to the leasing office.

Here is where the story gets interesting!

Fortunately the firm did provide a perk for free parking at reasonably secure parking garage obvious walking distance from work plus it was walking distance from the YMCA and grocery store! They bought a used utility van - no windows type with the large mirrors on the driver side and passenger side. They put in a bed and small kitchen to cook food showers at the Y (plus a good work out - why not!?) buy food daily at the grocery store.

At the end of their 5 year plan they put in their notice and when talking to one of the general partners they stated that they were moving to Georgia to open up their own firm with the money they saved from working at the firm. The general partner knew how much they made and how in the world could they save that amount of money in San Francisco. He asked around the firm and found out their living out of the van. A few days later the couple with general and senior partner who was so impressed they fronted the cost for a new office in GA.

I don’t see anything wrong with van life as long as he is working towards advancing his career and saving money!

These guys are disconnected from the real world. If he has family nearby, he can live in a van in someones driveway free and save a lot of money. He doesn't have to have all the fancy bells and whistles.

I have been living in my truck. This has been good for me. You are against it because it will hurt your income if too many people do this. I have had enough with greedy landlords
