What is AHCI?

What exactly does the AHCI/IDE selector in the BIOS do? Can it affect drive performance or functionality?

there's another option to change ide to ahci.
just change the setting first to ahci and then boot to safemode,
after booting to safemode, the ahci drivers will automatically install then restart,
now you can boot on ahci mode without bsod.
tested on windows 7, 8/8.1 and 10

Wow, this is the first Techquickie video that actually helped me in my IT job!
A. I had no idea AHCI was really faster.
B. Whenever imaging classroom PCs I was usually forced to use whatever mode Windows (7 mostly) was installed with. Now I found a registry tweak!
