Living in Kansas, Ive had a basement under my house for 47 years. This is the first winter season that my sump line froze. My brother went to the big box hardware store and got me some PVC pipe so I could run an alternate line out the window before my basement started to flood. Due to rain we had before the hard freeze the ground soaked it all up to below the freeze line which is why I am still getting seepage in through the various cracks of an aging basement.
Hope everyone is staying warm and keeping those water lines from freezing. Letting all your faucets drip for days on end is far better than a frozen line that eventually bursts.

Check on your neighbors! This is a really bad disaster for many. Make sure the vulnerable in your community have heat, water, electricity, etc. These storms are particularly deadly for the elderly.

Praying for all those affected by these storms, those without power and a source of heat. Please check on your neighbors. Those living alone and the elderly. Even a little bit of sympathetic understanding does a lot to help these people to stay strong in the face of adversity. I can only imagine what it must be like for them to be cold and hungry with no way of knowing what's going on....brings tears to my eyes because there are a great number of people who need help but have no way of seeking or asking for help.

REPORTERS: Please share these tips from an Idaho/Montana gal: Copy/Paste to Social Media

1. Layer up. Leggings, pants, skirts (more skirts = more insulation); Loose is better than tight. Hats and scarves.
2. Create a 'warm area' in your home and close off all other rooms. Keep space heaters pointing under sinks in bath and kitchen.
3. Keep shovel (snow or otherwise) in the house so you can shovel OUT. You can accomplish a lot outside if you do it in short spurts and seek warm room inside til warm enough to tackle again.
4. Make HUGE pot of warm soup/stew/pot o' beans, whatever - but you will do well to have warm food instantly available.
5. Don't leave the house and drive. Just don't. Make your neighbors your concern for a few days during the emergency cold.
6. You can pitch a tent (or make a fort) in your living room or kitchen, or the smallest room in the house and make it fun - and the tent will be warmer will all the bodies and pet bodies in there. If the power goes out, you'll still survive.
7. If you go outside in footwear that is not grippy, take and Wrap cord or twine or thin rope around so it will catch in the ice and snow. Still, walk like a penguin.
8. Fill your tub and every vessel you have. Make sure drinking water is for just that and not other things.
9. If you have an old-school plug-in landline, sometimes the trickle of electricity will allow it to function (write important phone numbers down).

Literally no one looks at the fact that the magnetic field has moved 40° toward Siberia and has split it 2.

In 1994 I experienced an ice storm in West Tennessee. Large oaks laid over, power out for two weeks.

i lived in austin in the '80's
we had 'northers', snow, temp dropped from 50 to 20 in three hours.
it was no big deal
no loss of power
we had fun playing in the rare snow
this storm is not the problem
politics, green new dumb deal, that's the problem

This is the 330 year grande solar minimum in action. It will last until at least 2025 . You can expect more of this along with very bad crops
