Hi Bull. I live in on th4e edge of the Talladega National Forest, so leaves are not problem—getting rid of them is. When the leaves fall, I give them a single pass with the lawn mower to chop them up. Then I use them to cover my grow bags, top off my compost bin refilling it as needed, and the open areas in my raised beds. I also collet and store them in two trash bins, and use it to mulch the garden during the growing season. I didn't run out of leaves to use until the end of September. Come planting time, I cover the leaves with a layer of compost, and plant into it. I keep my soil moist with light watering throughout the year, planted or not, to keep the soil biology alive. I try to grow year-round, so it is important that I feed the soil. This also reduces the amount of fertilizer needed to replenish the nutrients in the soil. I have a lot of worms and mycelium growth in my soil, so I must be doing something right.

Excellent information Bull, most people rake and bag or rake and burn their fallen leaves this time of year.

God put everything we need to make and build soil for free, leaves, plants and manure

In addition to mulching, we make giant bags and containers of leaf mold every year. We also just collected a bunch of bullwhip kelp (your namesake!) off the beach, which is a great soil amendment.

If I may ask, what type soil would you recommend for container gardening? I’m using garden bags and five gallon buckets. Thank you so much. 🙏

The leaves and the wood chips were some of the most valuable resources that I had in my gardens. I used to pick up all the free bags of leaves that I could. Get those free coffee grounds to throw into the compost pile too. Poor soil can be turned into fertile soil that way. Good job on leaf collection.
