In an unscripted addition to his weekly address at Saint Peter's Square... Pope Francis made an emotional plea for peace on Sunday.
Ahead of the centenary of the start of World War One... he said his thoughts were particularly on crises unfolding in the Middle East, Iraq and Ukraine.
His voice appeared to crack... as he made a direct appeal to stop the war... saying: "Brothers and sisters, never war, never war I am thinking, above all, of children... who are deprived of the hope of a worthwhile life, of a future."
The pontiff's remarks came as a humanitarian truce broke down on Sunday in Gaza.
Today marks 100 years since the outbreak of the first World War.
