Rockets heading towards the US embassy in Baghdad shot down before reaching their target.

Several rockets were fired in the direction of the US embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, on the evening of Thursday according to local reports.

Citing Iraqi military officials, Reuters reported that the rockets were shot down prior to reaching their target, and did not cause damage in the embassy compound.

Videos filmed on Thursday showed counter-rocket systems being deployed. This footage, recorded by BBC Persian journalist Nafiseh Kohnavard, shows fire over the Tigris River near Baghdad’s Green Zone, where the embassy is located.

“The US Embassy compound was attacked this evening by terrorist groups attempting to undermine Iraq’s security, sovereignty and international relations,” the embassy later wrote in a tweet. “We have long said that these sorts of reprehensible attacks are an assault not just on diplomatic facilities, but on the sovereignty of Iraq itself.”
