In his new work the celebrated innovator sets out a wide-ranging, practical—and accessible—plan for how the world can get to zero greenhouse gas emissions in time to avoid a climate catastrophe.

Arun Majumdar, who recently stepped down as co-director of Stanford’s Precourt Institute for Energy, is on the School of Engineering faculty. He served as acting undersecretary for Energy, was the founding director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy (ARPA–E) and was part of the science team that helped stop the Deep Water Horizon (BP) oil spill.

One excellent way would be to get rid of all the energy intensive linear programming in Windows. Another would be the reduce the graphical screens and animation in Windows that are unnecessary and consume energy being so.

I started my career in computing in the 1960s. I ran a computer that did payrolls for over 7000 employees weekly. We did chemical math modeling to manage plastics production facilities more efficiently. The computer we used had just 8K of storage and 1K of memory.

Compare that to your phone and consider how much work you can get done with it besides making and taking calls. Most of the computing power is wasted doing graphics to entertain, amuse or feed you commercials to buy more stuff we don't need.
