Interesting rendition. Mary J Blige is a hip hop/soul singer so Elton John knew that by using her the song would sound different. Elton John is definitely a performer so I'm sure he deliberately looks for ways to bring fresh takes to old songs

I love BOTH these artistes - have been listening to Elton since 1970 and Mary J Blige since 1994. This is a wonderful rendition of a marvellous Elton song - we've all heard the original so many times, so it's great to hear Mary J's contribution. After all, she's queen of hip hop, not rock, and normally sings in a higher register (as you can hear later in the song). A lot of the audience seemed to appreciate it anyway.
