One thing to remember is that just about every cruise that had been booked pre-Covid, for cruising in 2020/part of '21, was cancelled. Those people that had paid fully already (essentially anyone 90 days out of mid March '20 cruise dates at minimum) were pushed into future cruises. So a lot of cabins were sailing in late '21, and now, paid back in 2020. That depresses current sales figures as the ships have pre-paid guests on them.

Think of it as a plane flying half full of only mileage using passengers. I was looking at a Antarctic cruise in Jan '23 and looked at a forum on cruisecritic for that particular cruise; I'd say that based on comments, roughly 75% of the people talking had booked for 2020/21 and were forced to move to '23.

The cruise lines will have to work through that HUGE backlog of paid passengers (plus their future cruise credits for moving their cruise dates forward - meaning lower sales) before they can fill up again with the "pre Covid" fully paying passengers.

I'd like to add one little bit of info that really hasn't been talked about much and that is Carnival pulling 2 ships from Costa to the US market (Costa is owned by CCL, these are to be marketed as "Costa by Carnival" with everything Carnival except the fin tails...). That's pretty smart for CCL. Their VAST number of customers are in the US. Lift capacity is a mess not just in the US but outside too. By pulling two ships to the US, they not only bring those berths closer to their customers but also reduce the need for those customers to add the costs of international travel to those ships.

ccl is a good trade stock if you are a very good trader, its very volatile, so if you make the correct desicion you can make a lot of money, but its for people who know to use stop loss and take profits

for value investors its very risky

Do you think health risks are playing a part in occupancy levels?
Lots of older people like cruises, but we seen so many horrible situations on ships with covid.. is that a hang up? Are older, more vulnerable, people still hesitant?
I personally think this is more a deciding factor for having cash.

Definitely a speculative play. I made a nice trade on it a couple weeks ago for a 18% gain in two days, more luck than skill.

I cashed out on MCK, the uptrend is strong, but I see the market rolling over so it is hard to be in something trading rich.

I am thinking about buying bonds for recovery stocks - I get 15% yield or I get shares of the company (current shareholders would go to zero defaulting and giving it all to bond holders).

I think with the given interest rate hikes and the cost of fuel, Americans and the world will be traveling less and less. But long term I hope this industry survives. For those that never been on a cruise it’s an awesome experience! I wouldn’t recommend the super large ones though. Just overly crowded.

Can you take a look at NVR (home builder)? They have a low risk model where they don't buy the development land outright and they've been consistently buying back shares over the years.

I'd love it if the SPX moves a bit down more I can catch carnival below 7.5 so I can buy a 2024 call. I think as a speculative play I love the odds.
