AUPE mourns the passing of Alex Janvier

It is with great sadness and our deepest condolences that we mark the passing of celebrated Indigenous artist Alex Janvier. Janvier’s unique style, which combined Indigenous inspiration and modernism, won international acclaim and cemented his legacy as a member of the Indian Group of Seven.

AUPE was honoured to collaborate with Janvier during our Centennial Celebrations in 2019. Together, we bestowed an original Janvier piece, a diptych entitled Sunrise and Sunset, to the Legislative Assembly as a gift to all Albertans. This piece adorns the Legislative chamber walls, and a recreation was recently installed at AUPE headquarters in Edmonton.

Our hope is that Sunrise and Sunset serve as a reminder of working peoples' contributions to our province and the immeasurable contributions Janvier made through his life and art.
