Giraffes used to roam the Midwest, leaping covered wagons with a single bound. It was said if a 'jumping horse' pooped on your wagon it was good luck.

My favourite fact about the giraffe is that there is a nerve that travels from the brain to the mouth to control swallowing, but the nerve wraps around the heart in the middle. So the nerve goes 3m down, around the heart and 3m back up the neck to the throat.

It must have been painful and a disaster to the evolutionary process of the giraffe when their "grandfathers" and "great-grandfathers" heads exploded before they were fully evolved... which makes me wonder how the giraffe got here.

Their long legs enable them to reach high into the trees - their long necks balance the long legs so that they can drink.

A long neck goes with long legs - look at the camel for instance.
Consider also the dachshund with an alternative arrangement.

Many zoologists and all casual observers are lazy of thought and just repeat the belief of long neck to eat high up.
