Is Crash: Mind over Mutant BETTER than Crash of the Titans? [Review]

Crash of the Titans was a pretty wild departure from what the Crash Bandicoot series had been doing up until that point, and considering the series had already ventured into kart racers and party games, that's saying something. Titans was followed up by a sequel called Crash: Mind over Mutant. The only question on EVERYONE'S mind is this: is Crash: Mind over Mutant better than Crash of the Titans? There's only one way to find out. Hope you enjoy! :]

Titans is a very natural evolution. It came out during a time were platformers started to add more fleshed out combat.

I kinda have a soft spot for this game since I played it as a teenager with my little brother and we kinda had fun despite the annoying backtracking, I also love the soundtrack imo it's really great.

I can appreciate how Crash's spin attack was unlocked by default here, unlike Titans. Not sure if you noticed!

For me, Mind Over Mutant feels like one BIG cheat code to Crash of the Titans, with the whole "store your mutants" concept. I wouldn't say it's a bad game but there are some things I don't like about it:

1) The game is marketed as open world, yet you can't rotate the camera. This to me is disappointing, seeing as how Tag Team Racing, got it right
2) The fact that you can not turn on or off the cartoon cutscenes. I mean they're great but sometimes I wanna see these cutscenes in their normal style
3) Calling them "missions" makes no sense. When you think of "missions", you think of GTA, maybe even Spyro. They should've called them "chapters" like most games these days
4) No Aku Aku skateboarding or slide jump to make Crash move faster. The only way to move faster is by riding a Rhino Roller or Sniper. Spinning can somewhat make you move faster but it's not the same
5) The back tracking. It's ass and it's just padding, for what could've been extra levels
6) Having unlimited lives. Again, makes the game too easy
7) The mutants feel easier to stun compared to Titans
8) You can't barrel roll when you're using Aku Aku to block certain attacks, instead you have a shitty counter/perry attack
9) Why is Coco wearing Khaki pants??
10) You can't go back to Nina's school unless you glitch in there with a battler
11) Cortex is the only replayable boss
12) Getting a Rhino Roller from the desert is pointless because it'll spawn at the Ratcicle Kingdom regardless of whether or not your original rhino roller died
13) How come we didn't get an N-Gin boss fight?
14) Where's Dingodile and N Tropy???
15) I wish they brought power crystals back, even one of the NPC's in the Ratcicle Kingdom agrees with me
16) Don't play this game on PSP, it's buggy and the loading times are LONGER than Wrath of Cortex and a PS4 game combined
17) Brio's character model (outside of the cutscene) can only be seen in the instructions manual and barely in the Crunch boss fight

Things I do like:

1) Being able to talk to NPC's. The last games to do this was Crash Purple and Tag Team Racing
2) The desert because you can get crazy momentum with the rhino roller in the half pipes
3) The mutants being able to jump. This one is a no brainer
4) The side content
5) The Hero mutants. Their design looks cool and badass, and they're worth finding
6) Being able to play as Coco in the Wii and 360 version
7) Using the pointer to collect mojo kinda like collecting star bits in Mario Galaxy
8) Brio's dialogue because it's funny
9) Nina's school because it gives me Academy of Evil vibes
10) The Grimly because you can slow down time
11) Time trials playing differently from the original games
12) Being able to surf and freeze water with Ratcicle
13) NPC's will react to your mutants when you pull them out
14) Crash looking at NPC's and other objects
15) You get a notification icon that tells you that you're about to be dizzy when you spin
16) Spinning activates switches this time
17) TNT and iron crates being common this time. They did appear in Titans but they're extremely RARE
18) The spiked crate. I love how this crate debuted here. It's too bad it wasn't in Crash 4, but I guess that would defeat the purpose of the fire crate since it's pretty much the same hazard

Crash of the titans was the first crash game i have ever played and let me tell you the state of confusion i was in when i found out that crash was originally a platform game- to be fair, i was also a very confused kid, it didn't help that English wasn't my first language. But i gotta say, as a normal game, not attached to crash' franchise, it's a pretty good game. (warning, i'm completely biased)
I think Titan's story has a bit more of a serious tone, while Mind over mutant feels a bit more on the campy (?) side.
You mentioned how Titans have big gaps/spaces in it's levels but i think it really helps us appreciate the level's design/background and immerse us in the world, because it makes it feel like crash is just a small creature in this big world.
The compacted platforms in Mind over mutants is definitely something i noticed on first playthrough. It was a bit overwhelming though when i just started to explore it and see the amount of moving platforms and glowing mojo balls staring me down in the distance, waiting for me to get to them, but i do understand that they're trying to make it some sort of an open world, so that probably explains the back and forth thing.
Also something i found that's incredibly different is that Mind over mutant's design is so modern (?) and in titans it was all like ancient ruins (which i love because it felt like there's a story behind it) maybe they were trying to show that time has passed, idk.
I completely agree how much better the mutants' gameplay is in Mind over mutants though, and how ridiculous it was not being able to jump with them in Titans, but honestly, it was never really a problem for me, like, the mutants were there just to fight, it's rarely there for platforming.

it's probably a good time for me to mention that i only started playing Mind over mutant recently and i only played it for like 10 minutes LMAO, so I'm DEFINITELY biased, idk if its worth finishing. I also haven't watch your "is Crash of the Titans GOOD?" video, so ignore all of this if you talked about it there lol.

I didn't like Crash of the Titans on PS2. It's still the worst Crash game I've ever played in my opinion (even though I haven't played any Crash game on Nintendo DS, so maybe there can be worse and I'm not sure that's something to be hopeful about).
Therefore I wasn't happy with that game having a direct sequel one year later with the reveal of Mind Over Mutant. I knew I wasn't going to love. But to be fair I had completed CotT 3 times so I had no reason not to give that new Crash game a fair chance as well.
I was surprised to find out it wasn't a bad game at all. I've never been a fan of that formula for Crash, in fact I lost my interest in the series when I convinced myself that this was the new direction Crash Bandicoot was going to follow and complaining about it was pointless. But I still enjoyed it way more than Crash of the Titans.
There are bits of Mind Over Mutant that I genuinely liked, little things that are worth checking out for any Crash fan. In the end I don't feel like bashing it down like I did with the previous game even though it isn't the Crash game I really wanted.
