20 Lost/Unreleased Anime Dubs (Part 1)

While anime dubbing is very common , usually for a release of some kind (TV, Home Video) not all dubs get released and some are just missing. It's weird when knowing the amount of money in producing them. So I wanted to count down 20 dubs that we may never see.

I remember going to a Viz panel at SDCC back in the day and seeing a ShoPro page get projected while they were setting up their presentation. It had quite a few series logos but I can’t remember if Taro was one of them. I do know that three or four of them were for shows that hadn’t been localized at that time and that the presenter did explain that while said shows were a part of ShoPro’s catalog for international release that didn’t mean they were a part of Viz’s catalog for American release. Which bummed out quite a bit of the audience.

My Mum Actually Remembers Watching The Candy Candy Spanish Dub In Mexico During The 80s

The Telesuccess dub of Candy Candy is actually a separate English dub from the Ziv one, it even has a different opening song that is just an English version of the Japanese opening unlike Ziv's dub. Though back when Telesuccess dubbed Candy Candy they were known as "Questor International" they also made several other English dubs for the Philippines such as Voltes V.

Krillin’s name in the Harmony Gold dub was “Bongo?” That made me laugh more than it probably should’ve.

I grew up watching Amazing 3 back in the 60s. I have about 12 or 13 episodes that are dubbed on a dvd that I purchased from someone several years ago.

I remember seeing The Amazing 3’s english dub with perfect quality back then before the copyright, wished I could’ve downloaded them if I had the chance. I wanna hear the duck’s “Cranky Kong” voice

Aside from the prolonged cut-aways and meh music, I found myself a hidden gem of quality anime YouTubers! You earned yourself a sub on the road to become one of the greats! ~256 or so

Danguard Ace had one episode #41 dubbed in English and broadcast in the Philippines in 1979. It was said to be English dubbed from Hawaii. It too is lost mecisy. The characters retain their Japanese names. The American dub Force Five did only 26 of the 56 episodes, resulting in no resolution or conclusion.

On the topic of Dragon Ball Z’s audio it was actually leaked in it’s entirety last year along with the first seven episodes of Dragon Ball. I’m not 100% sure on this but my use of the word “leaked” is because supposedly the audio was meant to only be kept among a select few fans but one of them was nice enough to share it. Fingers crossed the rest of Dragon Ball gets out there eventually...
Great video btw! You’ve earned a new sub.

I actually still have a theory that Nichijou MAY have an English dub of SOME level of production but was never completed. It's never been confirmed, but the series was originally going to be released by Bandai's US branch right before they went out of business and that version of Nichijou was cancelled. It took YEARS and YEARS for the rights to be picked up and eventually Funimation released a sub-only version on Blu-Ray. I have a theory that it may exist but Bandai's US anime division threw it out when they dried up and died.

On Zoids Genesis, I actually got in touch with Tom Gibis for those who don't know is the voice actor for Shikamaru on Naruto and Sukari from Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. Since he appears on the cast list at 15:59. I asked him about it like what was going on with production and if it will ever be released? He said that at the time they were planning a relaunch of the toy line and for the longest time they were told that was the reason for the delay and he can't exactly remember when but he believed they did the dub around 2008 and he does not know if it will ever be released and as far as he knows the entire dub is just sitting on a shelf somewhere at Viz considering he also said that they even recorded an entire season which I believe was the entire show since the show only ran for one season. He also added that he was the lead character Ruuji and Michelle Ruff was the female lead Rei Mii. To add to that I was on an Instagram live stream autograph signing with Michelle Ruff recently and I asked her about Zoids Genesis and if it will ever come out and she said "What's Zoids? Is that an anime? If it is I probably don't remember doing it" which kind of makes sense she would say that since she works a lot maybe if someone showed her this it might boost her memory.

That's as much as I got out of them, add that to the lost media page.

Update: Just an update I got in contact with another voice actor on ZG, Darrell Guilbeau who played Seijuro, not much info but he did confirm that all 50 episodes were dubbed and he added that playing Seijuro on ZG was one of his favorite roles/projects to be a part of. I'm trying to get in contact with the other VA's like Devon Bowman and Julie Ann Taylor.

I had a VHS of the Harmony Gold first few episodes of DragonBall in the mid 90s. Probably around 95 or so. I have no idea what happened to it. I saw it before I had seen any episodes of DBz and it was my first encounter with the concept. It was an official release bought at a normal comic store, not some fan made copy.
