For almost 2,000 years, the Jews were unable to return to their homeland freely. Until May 14th 1948, when David Ben-Gurion declared the independent State of Israel, there were always restrictions on immigration of Jews.

Since then, as the gates of aliya have been opened wide to all, the country has flourished, with the Jewish people returning in numbers that our ancestors could only dream of.

But how can this be? How is it that the Jewish people are defying history and returning to prosper in their historic homeland, when this has never happened before in the annals of history?

The answer lies in the uniqueness of the Jewish people, which we can learn from our special reading of Parashat HaChodesh, read this year on Rosh Chodesh Nisan.
