Pirogue Traders of the Congo River

During the recent 'Voetspore' expedition we crossed Africa from East to West, trying to stay more or less on the Equator. Due to the war in the CAR, we were forced to complete the 1,734 km section from Kissangani to Kinshasa on a Barge. During this period the GoPro cameras were used to their full potential, doing time lapse filming and allowing me access to angles that were simply not possible with our 'standard' cameras. Especially getting footage of the Pirogue traders. With incredible skill these men, women and children paddle up to the barges travelling at an average speed of 10km/h, to sell their wares - fish, bush meat, charcoal, ground nuts, Palm oil, hand woven baskets, wooden chairs, etc, or to board as passengers. The GoPros are proving to be a fantastic advantage, not only to extreme sportsmen, but also documentary filmmakers. This short clip was filmed entirely on GoPro cameras, either handheld, or attached to a boom pole. Music tracks from Sonicfire Smartsound.
