Dumping Sony for Canon: PORTRAITS with a Canon R5 vs Sony a7R III (part 2)

How does a Canon R5 compare to a Sony a7R3 when shooting portraits? I took both cameras and some of my most commonly used portrait lenses on a portrait shoot to see how each camera feels during a shoot. Which has better autofocus? Which has better EYE autofocus? Is one camera easier to use? Are the final results noticeably better from one camera?
I find the answer to all of these questions to see if its time for me to dump my Sony a7r3 and make the Canon R5 my personal primary stills camera.

Watching this as a Nikon user. I was intrigued and bought into Sony and used it as a second camera for a year. What I learned? For most people, unless your system is truely limiting your real world usage, time and money can be better spent on true photography projects, learning skills, or traveling. Or simply get a better tripod and some new lights, or sign up for an online course for Art History. Camera companies are constantly adding new features and trying to leap forward, don't be distracted. Or you will want to switch every two years.

I was always a Canon user. Beginning with my EOS 500, to 700D, 7D Mark II going over into EOS RP at this arrived and now looking forward to the EOS R6. Canon never disappointed me. So I never changes the system or the lenses. All of my many lenses works on all this 4 cameras and on my coming R6. And in the future I will never change the system.

Sony plus Sigma lenses is the best combination for me at the moment. The Canon RF lenses look great, but I can't really justify the extra cost.

I'm sure you will switch in 6 months

Spend your money and switch to Canon. Then in a couple weeks, spend even more money and switch to the new Nikon Z7 II. It makes good entertainment. Love the live testing. It shows us that photography is more than just the spec sheet. I don't see enough technical difference to make me want to switch, but I can understand it if you don't enjoy the Sony experience. The similarity in the results tells us that we might be leveling off with mirrorless technology. I hope Nikon leapfrogs into the same pond. Hopefully you can get your D850 feel back with mirrorless benefits.

PS: I liked the concept of Tony's blind test.

Nikon's next camera: dumping Canon for Nikon!

I don't get why I should use my fingers to zoom in every single picture when the Sony just zooms in on the part that was focused wherever they are in the frame, so for portraits you can go through all pictures via dial and have the eyes shown instantly.

So twice the price, 3 years new and the R5 can do only slightly better… Impressive

Thank you. I’m so happy with the Sony a7Riii, I haven’t really considered the need to switch. The menu and UI are now easy to navigate and colors are great.

In particular I love jumping between Full Frame to Apsc mode that allows me to zoom in and out without changing lenses.

I am sure Canon users will be happy with the R5 and R6.

Chelsea, you need to join the step ladder gang, it's a life changer for use shorties.

Cool comparison, i much prefer the warmer tones of the sony. But what a great time, to have such amazing tools that are ALL great!

I just got the RF 70-200, and I'm blown away. It's wildly sharp, super lightweight/compact, the IS is way better, it focuses WAY faster, and it focuses WAY closer. That's compared to the EF gen 3 version I traded in, not Sony, but this lens is an engineering marvel! The 85mm 1.2 DS will be next on the calendar for me! I'm prepping for upgrading my EOS R to the 80-90MP R5s in 2021. 🥳

So rather than ditching my Sony A7R III and buying a new camera and lenses what do you think about just keeping the R III and adding the A7S III to my bag?

I thought the Sony not only had better colors, but made the lighting look better as well. The canon images seemed kind of flat to me, color and lighting. I also thought that between the first set of lenses used, the sony one had a nicer look to it, in my opinion.

check the Tamron 70 to 180, 90% of the performance for 40% of price and size, try to compete with that

I have the R6. I love it. I couldn’t afford the R5 because I used money for the 50mm 1.2 and the 24-105 f4

Hey Chelsea, a tip for the Sony: You can double tap on the screen to quickly zoom in (still not ideal, but a little quicker)

LOVE that you pay attention to the LITTLE DETAILS SUCH AS THE Columbia logo fringing/more ❤️

I wonder if Chelsea needs to talk with Irene Rudnyk about the best travel step ladder for outdoor portrait shoots.
