A native English speaker was asked to speak on this Phase 2 topic:

“Talk about the school that you went to.”

This is what he said – watch the video and see if you can hear any useful vocabulary or phrases to use in your IELTS test:

“So I’m going to talk about the school that I went to. I went to school in the North-west of England, it’s a long time ago now, but it was a very good school, it was a ‘Comprehensive School’, which at the time was a new type of school, which was different from previous types of school – children of different abilities would be in the same institution.”

“But it was an extremely good school. It was one of the top schools in the country and it was… What was most impressive about this school was the facilities that it had. It had a swimming pool, which at the time was very unique for a state school, it also had a number of facilities such as an engineering wing where we could go and learn how to do engineering tasks.”

"In addition, it had very good science labs, so we were able to do practical experiments, we didn’t just sit down and read books, we were able to do lots of different things, and that of course made education very, very interesting.“

“So I was very impressed by the standard of education that I received from the school, there were also a number of extracurricular activities at the school, there were a number of clubs, and every year they would produce a performance, and the performance was maybe something like a musical, and the students could take part – it was all very entertaining.”

“So, it was a very impressive school, great facilities, and I think it was one of the best schools in the country and it’s still going strong.”
