RA Live: Daniel Avery @ Pitch Music & Arts Festival 2024

The British DJ and producer made a triumphant return to Pitch after five years away.
Playing live at the Resident Advisor stage, the fabric resident brought the doof sticks to a standstill with his hard-hitting, melodic techno. It's old-school Avery in many ways: a perfect balance of grainy textures, with acid squelch and heady vocals. You’ll also find some breakbeats and jungle-style percussion in there.

Avery's deep but crossover-friendly style of techno has him earned fans across the globe. Since emerging in the late British electronica scene of the '00s, he came up under Erol Alkan's wing, whose Phantasy Sound label has become the primary outlet for Avery's music.

Just stumbled onto this live set this evening. This is one I just know I am going to be watching constantly on repeat in a darkened room on a bigger screen. Like reading a cracking Penguin classic, Daniel's music has a canny knack of taking you away to another time and place. It can transport your mind away from any present moments of life's downs into a meditative trance like state of sonic positive brainlike bliss. Hell it beats seeing 24 nonsense rolling media news stories normally obsessed with depressing current stories constantly reminding us that there are a number of pretty warped people stalking the streets of Blighty and over the political pond(LOL)...Lovely stuff Daniel.😊

This is why Avery's sets are so good: he puts so much work into the immersion/atmosphere aspects of the set.

Set List (incomplete):

00:00 New Faith
05:56 Dusting For Smoke
10:50 Naive Response
13:27 Diminuendo
16:26 Clear
19:20 Water Jump
25:42 Bliss
28:45 Free Floating
30:55 - dunno, but it sounds mint
33:00 Unfolder
38:56 Wall of Sleep
39:40 Need Electric (2023 Redux)
47:24 Going So Low
52:30 On & On (VIP Mix)
57:11 Higher
1:01:54 Lone Swordsman
1:03:12 Knowing We'll Be Here
1:08:19 Drone Logic (2023 Redux)

Not fully complete, theres a lot of mixing of vocals and stems between tracks and a few bits I don't know. This was a set worthy of a career worth of work at the top of electronic music. I was gutted when the ARTE concert live set got taken off Youtube, but this more than makes up for it. Big up Daniel, fucking love your tunes.

Only being familiar with the album versions of these songs, 1:13:55 -> end was quite the bombastic surprise.

If you love ambient music like Daniel Avery and Aphex Twin I found an artist via bandcamp that equally has an impressive back catalogue of very very tranquil, mellow music. A swedish DJ who has been around since the nineties and goes by the title of 'Wave Damage'. I cannot stop drifting off to some of his lovely sonic tuneage right now...
