How to Calculate Impulse Using a Force vs. Time Graph

In situations where the force is constant, we can calculate impulse by simply multiplying force by time. In some cases, though, the force will be changing. We can't just pick one value of the force to multiply by time. The solution: calculus! Or at least a very basic form of it. As long as you can find the area of triangles and rectangles, you can do this calculus.
Impulse is the product of force and time when force is constant. When force changes over time, we can calculate impulse by graphing force vs. time. We will then calculate the area between our graphed values and the X-axis (typically this is called the "area under the curve", even though the graph doesn't have to be curved and the area might actually be "over the curve" if we have negative values for force).
After we find a value for impulse, we can use the fact that the impulse is equal to the change in momentum to calculate new values for momentum or velocity. For more about momentum, be sure to check out the other videos in this playlist:
