UCLA vs. Hawaii Recap: Bruins win on last-minute field goal | CBS Sports

UCLA overcame a double-digit halftime deficit to hold off Hawaii 16-13 in its first game as a member of the Big Ten. The Bruins trailed 10-0 at the break, and big plays from quarterback Ethan Garbers, wide receiver Rico Flores Jr., and kicker Mateen Bhaghani was the difference.

Bhaghani drilled a 32-yard field goal with 56 second left, and the Bruins got a stop on the ensuing drive to seal the win. Bhaghani made all three of his field goal attempts in the second half.

Garbers played well against Boise State in the LA Bowl last season, so I was surprised he was so rusty this game. He shook off some of the rust in the second half so let's see if he can return to form against Indiana.

This was a must win game for UCLA if they wish to be bowl eligible, as it was the only relatively easy game on their schedule which will get only tougher. As for Hawaii, this game should give them confidence as they more than held their own against a B1G opponent--so hopefully they can take care of business and win the next two games which will give them a head of steam heading into MWC play at 3-1. Then 3 more wins and they will be eligible to play in the Hawaii Bowl.

I was really proud of Hawaii's effort in the game, especially the defense. However, I was so upset with the offensive play calling in the 2nd half. Hawaii was killing UCLA on these quick 5-8 yard pass routes, but pretty much abandoned those play calls the 2nd half. The Hawaii offensive line was struggling trying to stop the blitz's and pass rush UCLA defense. This is why they should have continued with the quick short routes or at least do a shovel pass a few times. and there was no safety valve potential receiver to help the QB. The middle of the field was wide open, but the offense could not make the necessary adjustments to win the game. UCLA is in for a long season in the Big 10 with a very tough schedule ahead.

To win despite not playing they're best is a good building block. Bruins should have won by 10+ if not for some terrible decisions by Garbers. Still too many "you" throws from him. Best thing was seeing the kicker make all the kicks he's EXPECTED to make. A lot to learn and grow from in this game. Go Bruins!!

The mistakes they made in this game would have been punished hard by better opponents. Good to be able to expose some of these weaknesses and still come out with a W. I'd rather have this to start the season than what happened last year with Dante Moore. Moore took care of business against weak opponents but never got tested and then cracked under pressure later on. But, we kept him starting for too many games cause of hope he'd figure it out.

How the Bruins respond to this type of performance will show what type of coaching staff we have. But at least we aren't walking into B1G play with an easy win and a false sense of security. Players did well to adjust in the second half. Now, coaches need to step up and make adjustments.

The Bruins were utterly pathetic in this game. They had 59 seconds left in the game to pull out the win. These commentators are ridiculous homers in their analysis. There is zero ways to see this game in a positive light.
