The Difference Between Solar Day & Sidereal Day

Earth physically rotates in 23hours 56min relative to distant stars – a Sidereal Day, BUT it takes 24hours to rotate relative to the Sun – a Solar Day

The difference? Earth orbits the Sun, so the Sun appears to move (down, in the vid), which means Earth needs +4mins to catch up!

So basically the mean solar time allows for the earths progression around the sun each day whereas sidereal time doesn't that into account

we add a day every four years to february .. we have to add a day every year
because 4 min × 365 d = 1460 m in a year
1460 ÷ 60 = 24.33 h
so it is a day

Excellent explanation. I’m sure I’m not the only one to notice your definition in text above the Sun-earth model has sidereal and solar with the same definition, while sidereal should say “one earth rotation relative to the STARS”. Not sure if you can edit the text now, after already uploaded. Plus I’m just seeing this 2.5 years later so probably does not matter now. Regardless, still a good visualization of the difference.
