Matt Taibbi talks with John about bias and the practice of moral clarity within the journalism industry, and the division this creates in the relationship between journalists and the public.

Formerly a professional athlete and private investigator, Matt Taibbi has a formidable journalistic record. He has worked as a freelance reporter in the Soviet Union, a sports reporter for The Moscow Times, and, more recently, as a contributing editor for Rolling Stone Magazine.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Conversations feature John Anderson, former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, interviewing the world's foremost thought leaders about today's pressing social, cultural and political issues.

John believes proper, robust dialogue is necessary if we are to maintain our social strength and cohesion. As he puts it; "You cannot get good public policy out of a bad public debate."

U.S. here. My take on "News". Has become totally "Opinionated Storytelling". Like either a bad or good "Movie, Sports Game, Internet App, and now even Healthcare and School". And even worse is the fact that all those Stories are Politicized depending on One's own ideology. Hope that makes some sense.

It may help journalists lift their game if they were licenced and accountable to a professional standards board. In the old days it was virtually impossible to detect a journalist's political leaning. It would help if they put professionalism back into the profession to regain credibility.

Same issue playing out in science. Activist-scientist is an oxymoron, just like activist-journalist.

'Stark critique of US media' = Urgent warning to Australia. I just finished Taibbi's book last night, and then from where I am here in London, did a quick run around of some 'news from home' in Australia as I do over coffee each morning. Not great. I know it's a bit too easy to punch-down at Sky, for example, and I know it is ultimately attracting only a very small audience - but that night-time lineup has become a foot in the door in Australia of US-style cable 'news' in every way, and I really, really hope it doesn't take off in Australia, in part because it's just awful, but in part also because I think the temptation would then be there for someone to set up the left-wing alternative - and then there you'd have it, Fox v MSNBC Australian Style, and so many would live their lives only through one of those windows. Would be awful. You can tell, even from here, that Australia is already becoming more and more hyper-partisan, 'my team/your team', and more and more of the news is following the sports-style Taibbi elaborates on in his book. It's no good. Really hope it doesn't take hold.

it's about ad revenue. one sided coverage/hyperbole is simply more profitable/more views. ...currently. that being said, cnn, msnbc are masters at this. Also, great interview.

seems like a journalist with genuinely good intentions, just fairly young and still in the process of becoming a conservative.

Vote Libertarian in the USA and make every party a minority party by doing so. If nobody has a majority in the house & senate, the madness will stop.

so your telling us parties didn't align (conspire) against Trump? that looses credibility in a oner, people pretending to be pragmatic and objective but never brave or having conviction enough to actually be so. Half the issue is pretenders like this, like or dislike Trump the personality or his record in governance, one has to be honest about what went down or admit ignorance, trying to play it safe achieves nothing of consequence and renders you just another inconsequential talking head.
