Future motorcycles: Honda self-balancing Riding Assist tech keeps bike balanced - TomoNews

LAS VEGAS — Honda has unveiled a well-balanced piece of motorcycle tech designed to help riders stay in the saddle at low speeds.

The Riding Assist concept bike has an adjustable front fork that assumes a wider angle to increase stability and its own motor attached to the front wheel, TechCrunch reported.

As anyone who’s ever tried to maneuver a big bike out of a parking lot at low speed knows, keeping balance at 2 or 3 miles an hour is one of the trickiest aspects of riding.

The bike was revealed earlier this week at tech tradeshow CES 2017 in Las Vegas. Although there’s no plans to bring it to market soon, the concept bike shows how Honda’s investment in robotics can have spin-off benefits for its vehicles.

The technology behind the Riding Assist bike was honed in the development of both Honda’s humanoid Asimo robot and UNI-CUB scooter, according to TechCrunch.

Personal robots like Asimo are likely still a decade away from being ready to be sold to consumers.

However, the legacy technology from the development of Asimo and the UNI-CUB could help bring real improvements to Honda’s vehicles much sooner than that.

This would be great for us senior citizen riders. I gave up riding over 10 years ago because of knee injuries that made me fear that I would not be able to hold the bike up if it got off balance.

Honda has got it all. From Honda Jet, to Cars including Luxury line up, to Motorbikes, and Boat motors as well as Jet Skis, Snowmobiles, they even got the lawn mower and electric generator business covered.

A very useful tech that would really help beginner riders or riders who are smaller.

I just got my Learner's licence a few months ago. Dropped my bike for the first time last weekend on a stationary position while turning right on to the street from my driveway haha. Fortunately there was no damaged. I lost my balance as i let go of the clutch a touch quicker and grabbed the front brake when it stalled lol. Duh me. I was still able to hold it while i dropped it slow to the ground. But the bike weighs 180kilos so i had no option but to let it dropped 😂. These self- balancing would be perfect to avoid drops like i did. It would not just prevent drops but also still allows you to learn to ride a motorcycle the way you ought to learn to ride one. This might not be for experienced motorcyclist but very beneficial for novice riders. Honda knows theres a market for this bike. Good on ya Honda for being creative and trying to solve a problem in the motorcycling industry.

The only other company that does something similar is another Japanese Company Mitsubishi which also makes Medium Range, Commercial Airplanes like MRJ series. Hyundai of Korea makes Big Ships. So, these companies are truly remarkable. No US or European automobile company is as versatile as these Asian companies.

I could see this auto balance being a good thing. I have 500 lb bike and when the driveway is covered in leaves it can be dicey backing out. Shoe slips on the leaves and down goes the bike. I just hope the tech isn't heavy or buggy and turns off once the bike is up to speed.
