We all have a general idea of what inflation is, or at the very least we understand how it affects our lives. When the price of a burger at your favorite burger joint goes up, the manager shrugs and says it’s because of inflation. Since you can’t afford that burger anymore, you finally decide to go to a grocery store and cook for the first time in 5 years, only to find that the grocery store’s prices seem weirdly high too. And then you notice your power bill has been creeping up, your ISP recently increased your internet bill, your phone plan went up by a few dollars, and so on and so forth. The effects of inflation show themselves subtly, with everyday regular frequent purchases going up a couple of cents here and a couple of dollars there. You might not notice it when you’re purchasing an individual item, but at the end of the month, you suddenly feel that you have less money left over than you’re used to. That feeling that your money is getting you less stuff today, that it’s worth a little bit less, is essentially the effect of inflation.
