In this video I react to Culling Voices by Tool.

My React to Tool Playlist:

Hi, I'm Dean Wolfe, Canadian classic prog rock guitar teacher on YouTube. I grew up on classic 70s prog but abandoned it in the late 80s. Prog seemed dead and my orig. prog band was told by labels we were too prog. So i went onto grunge, pop, then folk, then strictly acoustic solo guitar etc...staying loyal to my staples like Yes and Rush, BUT 2020 was the year of my return to prog and the discovery that SO much great prog went on that I'd totally missed out on. So join me as I catch up on 30 years of prog!

One of the most beautiful expressions of artistry is restraint. When you can but you don’t. This song is Tool after showing us they can, pull back and don’t, in a beautiful new way. Hope this makes sense.

This is a sleeper and again reinforces you don’t casually listen to Tool. Each listen allows you to find more intricacy.

Its different, but its definitely Tool. I looove how they take their time on the buildup here. So besutiful! And Dannys groove when the drumming starts is pure class. Man how I love this band!!

Adam Jones is my biggest influence as a guitarist. I adopt all his techniques then just twist the crap out of them to form my own style because copying is not the goal. When you start at 31 you need a solid ground to push up from and grow and Adam Jones provided that foundation like no other guitarist ever would.

The song is a bit underappreciated on the internet, but most Tool fans still love it. It's just on an album with no mediocre song at all, so it can get overshadowed by everyone else's favorite pick. "Pneuma" may be my favorite song on the album, but that doesn't detract from how great "Culling Voices" is.

Hi Dean, so glad you checked out this track!

Just the subtlety in the song is what truly makes it lovely, in my opinion. It has a deliberate build from the first, clean section to the latter, heavier part. But that's what I love about it. There aren't belligerent assaults on the senses with how big they could've made this song - the lack of vocals being the first aspect I love in the hard part. It gets right to the point and makes it boldly. But more like a fine, aged wine, it doesn't need to be the ripest, boldest tooth-staining wine to be the most complex and nuanced.

Also, the intro/repeating guitar riff being based off the same note played two different ways (G string 11th fret, B string 7th IIRC) works perfectly with the lyrics about mental health/imagined interplay/conversations we've never had/etc. It's like an unspoken easter egg that I think makes this track brilliant. I think the simplicity in this song really adds depth.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to review this song. I truly appreciate it!

Great reaction, one of the best off the album. Invincible, Pneuma and Tempest get the attention. I think this and descending are the two best off the album though.

When I first started listening to the album, chilling voices and descending were my last favorite tracks...I liked them but did not love them exactly, but over the last year they have both really grown on me ... that is one of the things I absolutely love about TOOLS music, the more you listen the more you hear and get out of it, it is something I also really love about Pink Floyd . Anyway I often find find myself going right to this song the vocals are so haunting and that with the guitar part in the middle just monstrous!

Les Paul is coming out with a limited edition reissue of Adam Jones '79(edit) custom silverburst. He believes he gets his unique tone due to the heaviness of the guitar and the metallic finish. He has been helping them build the reissue (not replica).

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I love the whole album and this song is just simply perfectly played & mixed, the vocals are so hauntingly beautiful! I will never forget my feelings and head space when I first heard this. Whole album alone, in the dark, with headphones. I was entranced with the guitar and vocals, I wanted it to keep going!
