How The World's Largest Telescope Is Built

The Extremely Large Telescope or ELT for short, will be the world’s largest optical and infrared telescope under construction in the Atacama desert, Chile. It can collect about 10 times more light than the largest telescopes and deliver 16 times sharper images than the Hubble Telescope. An extraordinary telescope like this requires an extraordinary site. The finalized location; the Atacama desert might appear like a dry, barren place at first glance. But it is this very property that makes it an ideal retreat for astronomers and other space researchers. The telescope would be mounted atop a 1000 ft (3000 m) mountain called Cerro Armazones in the Northern region. With the added height and the clear sky, the ELT can peak far away in space to discover any Earth-like planets called Exoplanets, or any sign of extraterrestrial life. This would answer the question; “Are we alone in this universe?”

Without the dome construct, the early construction site looked very much like a huge version of Stonehenge!

These big ones all have active 3d controlled atmospheric compensation, against the atmospheric turbulencies. Someting the old famous ones are missing and the space telescopes don't even need.

Now that Starship is nearing service, see how long it takes to get the first giant sized telescopes into orbit. Or a twin instrument on the moon. Switched together, that would give quite a perspective!

Great Informative video. That telescope is a technical marvel. Thanks!

I truly hope that the management of this telescope will be a lot better than the crappy management of the webcams covering the progress of the telescope construction, slow updating and usually only working for 1 or 2 of the 3 cameras.
