How to sew pajama pants and shorts

Sewing a pair of pajama pants (or shorts) is easy, fun, and one of those beginner projects I come back to ALL the time. My kids are always growing! So they always need pjs! And for this project I partnered with Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Store, which has an amazing selection of flannel fabrics that make awesome, snuggly, lounging pants. Ahhh! I just want to buy all the fabrics! So many cute prints.

The pattern used in this video is the KID Shorts pattern found here on my site:

For all your fabric and craft needs, visit your local Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft store, or check them out online:

And visit the Creative Spark blog (hosted by Jo-Ann) for tons of cool ideas and tutorials:

You can also find more MADE Everyday projects on my site:

Safety Note: If you're concerned about the safety of your flannel fabric, you can use FireGuard spray by Force Field, which is available in-store at Jo-Ann.
Or you can find it online here:

just a little helpful tip for anyone who needs it: use old wrapping paper to make sewing patterns if you need big pieces of paper!

I want to share a hack that worked well for me. I wanted the look of drawstrings, but I wanted the ease of elastic to pull the pants on and off. Also I happened to only have about four inches of elastic on hand at that time. So I cut my drawstrings the length I wanted for them to circle the waist, tie in front, and dangle nicely. Then I cut them in half and attached each half to one end of the elastic. Then when I threaded the whole thing through I had the adjustability of drawstrings, but only had to tie them once and then I could pull the pants on and off easily over my hips because of that little bit of elastic in back.
This was especially useful to me during a pregnancy when my waist measurement kept changing so much. Just cut the pajama pants with plenty of extra room and gather them up close when you're littler and ease them out as you need it!

Hi Dana, what's the difference between a girl and a boy's PJ, I mean the crotch area. I once made shorts for my daughter who's 8 and her brother who's 4. The girls' fit perfectly but the boy's own was a bit tight at the crotch. After watching this video, my son who is 16 wants a pair of PJ. I'd love to make one or two for him but wouldn't want to make mistakes. I'm not a pro at sewing, I just watch and follow people like you on youtube.
