The way we order the names of dinosaurs and other animals can leave the layperson with some level of confusion. Hopefully this helps clear some of it up!

Thank you! I’m doing a spec bio project, and the research reports needed this, so I appreciate it, this came out at the perfect time lol

My nerdy brain has never been more excited to learn about taxonomy and linguistics ❤

Joke's on you, I'm already subtribed.

Species, Genus, Family, Order, Class, Phylum and Kingdom. Those are about as deep into taxonomy as I ever got.

Anything deeper than that is where it gets really confusing, because of naming schemes like this 😅.

I very much appreciate this quick and simple but very effective explanation of how suffixes relate to taxonomic rankings! Across the paleontology videos and channels I’ve seen, I feel like explanations as to what clade is being referenced by a particular name are either completely glossed over or needlessly complicated / unsatisfactory. I’ve been familiar with the taxonomic rankings and their respective suffixes for a little while now, having looked at phylogenies for fun on many occasions (an egregious nerd brag, I know, I’m sorry 😭), so understanding wasn’t an issue for me in those instances, but I often wondered how well those other explanations would have served people with much less or no knowledge of taxonomy. All that to say once again that I am thankful for this guide!

I've been binge watching all the ydaw videos and I just want to say thank you for making them, they're so educational and fascinating, it's been satisfying my crave for dinosaur content, I'm so tempted to buy merch !!

I like this. Talk about simplifying the explanation

I love when naming conventions are used like this, reminds me of organic chemistry, it’s beautiful

You wouldn't want to do this for the major races in D&D would you? Someone has got to get on that 😆

I kind of want to see you cover that one kangaroo-shaped toy marketed as Moropus(a schizotheriine chalicothere), but I believe you get your toys from fan mail…

This is true for animals. Scientists, trying to ruin things for the already confused future biology students, decided that plants gave a completely different system - for example plant families end in aceae and subclasses end in idae
