SMB 'minus world' -1: Killing Bowser leads to inevitable crash

This is the FDS version of Super Mario Bros., and its famous "minus world". What would happen if you kill the Bowser in -1? It would lead to unavoidable(?) crash near the end. That's why it would always crash starting from the middle point of -1, since Bowser wouldn't be loaded that way.

I'm more intrigued by the screen wrap + wall clip that you did at the very beginning of the video.

Killing Bowser crashes Paper Mario Bros.

Masterjun and I investigated and sadly it appears that ACE is not possible because the crash is too constrained. The best we can do is control the coordinates that some fireworks spawn at.

If you want to play around with it, you can avoid the crash by having mario's Y coordinate be 0x31 at the time of the crash

(I’m probably wrong since I never tried this, but..) I think the reason why the game crashed after killing bowser on world -1 because there are probably other bowsers in the level too and they’re probably connected, which means after you kill bowser and continue though the level, the game will crash while it attempts to load another bowser, because the sprite no longer exists. (the game crashes if it attempts to load a sprite that doesn’t exist, it’s similar to paper Mario)

I tried to reproduce this a bunch of times and found that it sometimes (rarely) doesn't crash. Taking a look through the trace log now to see if ACE is possible

Technically, killing Bowser in 36-1 in FDS version of the game causes the game to initialize firework display without spawning the star flag entity. According to the decompiled source code of the game, the execution flow gets stuck in infinite loop until any of the 256 slots has the ID of the star flag entity. Editing the RAM manually to make the game believe that there's star flag entity in any of the slots will let the game continue running as normal. The side effect is the infinitely long firework show that uses coordinates found in out of bounds entries of the respective table, so you may see fireworks going off all across the screen before they explode in proper locations before the whole thing loops back.

i'm assuming this happens with any level that has bowser and a flagpole in it?

In some other cases, The Minus World takes you to a copy of 7-2

If y'all don't know, nintendo referenced the crashing noise in mario maker 2 as a sound effect, never thought it'd have its own tribute by nintendo themselves

Thanks for the video - It's actually possible to get through! If you time it just right you can squeeze through and complete the level. Sometimes you even get fireworks when you make it through. There's a video on my twitch page if you're interested.

Not to mention it takes hours upon hours to even create a TAS to begin with.

Why haven’t you talked about the crash in world 9-1! That world has a crash that if you don’t release the d pad button on the controller before the first crash trigger you can crash the game. Releasing the d pad button makes it possible to get past the crash. The crash location varies on your inputs.

Don't Defeat Bowser World -1 Because It Can Cause The Game To Crash

I wanna try this. Does the Nintendo Switch's Nintendo Switch Online NES use the Shindou version of SMB? When you open SMBTLL, it shows Super Mario Bros 2, and SM64 has no backwards long jump, so logically...

I'm so damn tired of people misconstruing the TAS as a means to cheat. When will people learn that a tool-assisted superplay (TAS) and a real-time speedrun are not even remotely trying to compete with one another?
