I'm glad you left the flaw. 🙂 It's a beautiful board, by the way. I have a cutting board that's been in my family for at least four generations. That thing could be around for a while.

April, I love that design and any person who hasn't run their bearing into a recess before hasn't done much router work. We've all made that mistake. I made a similar cutting board a little while ago incrementing in 1/32-in strips from 1/32 to 16/32 in both woods, then cut off the last 1.5-in from each end and flipped them 180 degrees. This caused the pattern to reverse itself on the ends compared to the main body. Visually stunning. Give it a try.

I think you took this to the next level! Your flexible ruler method of making a curve is a good trick to have in your bag. I usually take a piece of dowel, hold one end as a pivot point, hold a pencil at the other end, and use it to describe an arc of the radius I want. It sounds clunky, but works surprisingly well when a curve is too flat for a compass. I'm going to try your method instead on my next curved board. I also found it helpful to see a way to handle a juice groove on a non-rectangular board. Really liked that technique.

In my opinion the flaws are what make woodworking by hand unique and custom. Little imperfections are the character. If you want something totally perfect buy it at a big chain store from machine made.Love your videos April.

I sure enjoy your projects and your honesty I showing your mistakes. As much as I enjoyed Norm Abram’s show on PBS I don’t recall him ever showing a mistake. I’ve been woodworking almost 60 years and every project has a story like yours. Keep them coming.

Wow that is a beautiful cutting board. Any flaws that occur give it character and shows that it was Handmade and not machine made which I believe makes it that much more beautiful. Thanks for sharing

Beutiful board, April. Don't worry about mistakes when making a new item for the first time, I'm making my first knife at the moment and making a tone of mistake in the process. As you said, mistakes give character and a story, they also teach us huge amounts as even if you never make this project again, at some point you'll be making something and come across a very similar situation and hopefully remember not to make the same mistake again.

I saw something years ago that said "I never make the same mistake again, I think up new ones every day". I'm pritty sure this should be the motto of all makers lol

Cutting boards are about one of my favorite projects to do, I actually have a booth a a local farmers market, where i sell them. This one looks really pretty, Im glad you embraced the mistake.

Well the whole demonstration was wonderfully done. The template for doing the groove is a no brainer - yet I did not think of it and I have been wood working for a long time. Thanks for your talents and I love the new shop.

Jigs and templates is the key to better projects as well as machining every piece for the project you can rather than working with sawcut edges. Keep up the good work as I have watched you nearly since the beginning and enjoy watching the progress.

Hey April, There is a rule I read in some magazine about 40 years ago on when to oil the cutting board. Once a day for a week, once a week for a month, once a month for a year, and once a year for life. Love the look of the board. No mistakes, just an experiment.

I love it and I love the fact you do not pretend to be perfect and share with us your mistakes. Great Job.

That board is gorgeous! I agree with your decision to keep the flaw in the board, I don't think it detracts at all.

April, don't feel too bad about your flaw. I've done that before too. Now I also check my router bit bearing height before each cut. It's a Great Cutting Board Design!
