Continuing the explanation of Daivi Sampat, Swami Aparajitananda takes up the next virtue:
VIRTUE 12: AKRODHA (ABSENCE OF ANGER)
• Being angry v/s. showing anger
• Recognise anger as an evil trait; do not justify it.
• Know what happens when anger seizes you (ladder of fall).
• What compels people to commit sin?
• Tip to conquer anger (nityasattvasto bhava - pure mind).
• How to handle anger?
• Best way of getting rid of intense attachment, the trigger button for anger.
• Making meditation (i.e. that ability to look within and observe the mind, pay attention to the mind) a regular feature of your daily routine.
• Law: Earlier the detection, easier is the correction.
VIRTUE 13: TYĀGA (RENUNCIATION OF ATTACHMENT TOWARDS THINGS AND BEINGS OR DETACHMENT)
• Evil consequences of attachment (addiction, helplessness, compromise of higher values, sorrow, delusion)
• Why is the end result of attachment always sorrow?
• How is attachment the cause of depression?
• Keep in touch with realities of life. (Even this will pass away.)
VIRTUE 14: SHĀNTI (PEACE)
• The end result of all virtues and also the mother of all virtues.
VIRTUE 15: APAISHUNAM (ABSENCE OF PISHUNATĀ)
• Pishunatā i.e. back-biting or vilification is considered as the greatest vice which destroys relationships.
• Discussing the negative characteristics of persons in Purānas is not considered as pishunatā as the goal of discussion is self-improvement, not back-biting.
• Why do we tend to revel in the negativity of others?
VIRTUE 16: DAYĀ BHŪTESHU (COMPASSION TOWARDS ALL BEINGS)
• Compassion should be so strong that it forces you into action.
• Heart of a Mahātmā as defined by Tulasidas ji is described.
• When do we feel compassionate towards others?
• Why has Bhagavān given suffering to all of us? Benefits of suffering are discussed.
VIRTUE 17: KSHAMĀ (FORGIVENESS)
• Compassion is the feeling generated in the heart when you see a person suffering.
• Forgiveness is the feeling generated in the heart when that suffering person harms you out of helplessness.
• Out of compassion is born forgiveness.
VIRTUE 18: ALOLUPTVAM (NON-COVETEDNESS)
• Loluptvam = agitation of sense organs in the presence of sense objects when the mind is addicted to sense pleasures.
• Cause of loluptvam is sense addiction.
• Freedom = addictionlessness
VIRTUE 19: MĀRDAVAM (GENTLENESS, TENDERNESS)
• Absence of harshness when handling objects or dealing with beings and situations.
• This is the nature of a pure heart.
VIRTUE 20: HRIHI (MODESTY, A SENSE OF SHAME)
• What is a healthy shame? (eg. feeling embarrassed upon being praised in public; shame coming out of even thinking about an immoral act)
• What is an unhealthy shame? (not doing what you are supposed to do out of shame)
VIRTUE 21: ACHĀPALAM (ABSENCE OF PURPOSELESS MOVEMENT OF LIMBS)
VIRTUE 22: TEJAHA (SPIRITUAL GLOW OR SHINE)
• Reflection of divine virtues in the heart creates a special glow on the face.
VIRTUE 23: DHRITIHI (FORTITUDE)
• That never say die attitude of the mind, come what may.
• This is one virtue which ensures your success in Spirituality.
• Law of this world: Whatever you intensely desire in life, it will come to pass; it will happen.
VIRTUE 24: SHAUCHAM (PURITY, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CLEANLINESS)
• Cleanliness is next to Godliness.
• Purity of emotions and thoughts.
VIRTUE 25: ADROHA (ABSENCE OF DROHA)
• Not poking your nose in affairs of others; not creating problems for others.
• We are more interested in giving advice to others; don't interfere unless they invite you.
VIRTUE 26: NĀTIMĀNITĀ (HUMILITY / ABSENCE OF MĀNA - EXTREME PRIDE)
