I love painting over acrylics! I'm also a big fan of the way you do watercolor then seal the paper with matte medium before doing oil. That combination of having watercolor, then acrylic layer, then oil all at once on watercolor paper really makes me excited to use my art supplies! In college, I was always so discouraged by the standard "use oil paints on a canvas" instruction, then trying to keep it dust free for days (sometimes a week or more) while it dries.. Eeek! I wasn't told about fast dry mediums, and only working on canvas/panels can get so space consuming - so I quit oils. Not a single teacher ever told me you could paint over acrylic, or even paint on paper. Back then I'd never used quality cotton paper to know it wouldn't buckle/warp/fall apart like my cheap papers. You're probably saving a lot of beginners the confusion and discouraged feelings I had :)

Robin Sealark uses this technique a lot! She has some really impressive art if you look her up.

I loved this video. I use acrylic as my first layer before I start with oils. It makes the painting look so nice and yes it does dry a lot quicker.

Dear Lioba, thank you so much for this video, it was really helpful! I have an exhibition in August where I have to submit three painting and I haven't started working on any yet, I was really horrified about the deadline but this video actually gave me some hope. I can do the base layers with acrylic paint and don't have to worry for a smooth layer and after it dries I can work over on it with oil and achieve the result I want. I really love your artworks and you really inspired me to work with watercolor and use pencil color on top of it and Im really thankful to learn this technique too which I will apply on my painting for sure. I love you even more and you should know that I appreciate you. Love from Bangladesh.

I did use Acrylic for the underpainting only (not really just staining my Canvas) but since Oil is very consistent i didnt have problem with their long drying time, btw very informative video definitlly Will try this method i really hate Acrylic bc my country was so hot and the fast drying time is just a pain

I read one time, I don't remember when or where, but people was not using acrylics under oil because it's very unsure how long it will last. They said that with oils it's documented how long it will last, but acrylics haven't been around as long

First of all beautiful painting! The reason why oil painters use more oils on consecutive layers is so that the painting would last maximum anount of time (like historically long periods of time) in the same shape. I think this technique is interesting but based on my experience I’d question how well a layer of paint can attach to an actylic layer. Acrylics are basically plastic and don’t have the same porous texture that a canvas has.

I like the way you paint these girls, they look like dolls and wood nymphs . I like the fantasy look you give those magickal creatures .

i also use acrylic paint and finish with oils when it is reasonable--i love the process and reduction of time.

Thanks for the under painting idea. Oil under painting takes forever to dry. Just curious if you’ve ever tried any other water soluble under painting like egg tempura or casein? I’m hoping to get some feedback on what other artists use to under paint their oils and how they liked them. Beautiful work!

Can't wait to see more Lioba! If anyone is interested in more artists who do acrylic underpaintings with oil on top on youtube, these are a few I follow. Michael James Smith, Chuck Black Art, and Lachri Fine Art, all use a acrylic underpainting to varying degrees in their work.

And you also can use colour pencils on top of the acrylics, I use it for hair details, looks really realistic.

Genesis oil paints can be dried with heat. Blow dryer or 5 minutes in the oven at 200. Preferably on masonite boards.
